How about this...
"Michael is a city councilman, elected three times at-large (citywide). He has a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas School of Law and a master of laws degree from the University of Nottingham in England. He has been married 13 years to Nandita "Nandy" Berry, a lawyer who hails from Hyderabad, India." I wonder how he'd feel if his wife's heritage was publicy smeared in this manner? Didn't the English "conquer" India once upon a time?

The one thing you can said about Texas is that we're not the land of stealth politicians. Texas politics and politicians are like a cup of Texas truck stop chili -- they're spicy and prone to inflict heartburn. Down here they all seem to lack the gene that filters what comes out of the mouth. Which is a plus, since they never sneak up on you, 'cause you know exactly what flavor of kook, bigot, nut-case, sociopath, crook, fanatic... they are from day one on the campaign trail. (See the last governor's race.) This particular one is known to thrive on throwing verbal Molotov cocktails. Fortunately, Houston government is such a huge, high-inertia bureaucracy that the opinions of the politicians of the day have little effect.
Seriously, this is an epidemic form of ignorance down here. They look at the casinos just across the Red River and get a major case historical amnesia. They have a pull yourself up by your boot strap attitude that is exactly the same as what you see throughout the mid-west/west -- especially in reservation border towns. Plus, there is a good streak of completely contradictory anti- nanny-governmentalism that clashes with all farm and oil subsidies that make a good part of the economy in many a small Texas town. The wild-west mythos of the brave, self sufficient, hard-working, take-no-charity-from-no-one pioneer and drunk, indolent "savage" lets the descendants sleep better atop the bones of the Comanche et al. |

I heard that same ignorant $hit whenever we were ever referenced when I was in the Navy. The whole " Well they lost the war " and all that crap.
The irony of it was; unlike a civilian who could say whatever they wanted, I had to find a straw and suck it up. Of course these comments were usually made by high ranking enlisted ratings or brass. I think that dude is a ignorant douche` bag too!
