Man pleads to claiming false status

A man who falsely claimed to be an American Indian to receive health-care
benefits has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Charles Roger Leo Adams Jr. - who is also known as Charlie Smoke and Leo
Wolfslayer - also was indicted on charges of making false statements and
aggravated identity theft.

Federal prosecutors charged that the 43-year-old Adams provided a false
Social Security number and birthdate on an application to receive
federally-assisted low-income housing through Lakota Homes. They also charged Adams with
using his minor daughter's Social Security number to commit a felony.

According to court documents, between January 1999 and December 2004, Adams
claimed to be an American Indian enrolled in various tribes to receive free
health care through Indian Health Service for himself and his family. Adams
said those claims were not true.

He could receive as many as 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he
is sentenced Aug. 29.
