Fort Peck chairman fires editor of tribal newspaper

The chairman of the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana fired the editor of the tribal newspaper after questioning the coverage he received.

Bonnie Red Elk, who worked at the paper since 1976, was ordered to leave on Tuesday by chairman John Morales. "He told me last week he didn't like my news coverage," Red Elk told The Great Falls Tribune. "I didn't write his side and I questioned things."

Morales acknowledged that he didn't like the paper's coverage of his leadership. But he claims Red Elk was fired because she failed a drug test. Red Elk admitted to testing positive for marijuana use in February 2005 but said she has been clean ever since.
