Navajo woman prepares for Miss USA pageant

Onawa Lacy, a member of the Navajo Nation, is getting ready to compete in the Miss USA pageant after winning the Miss New Mexico title in October 2005.

Lacy, 23, a recent graduate of the University of New Mexico, was the first Native American woman to win the state title. She said she is proud of her Navajo heritage and culture.

Lacy, who grew up near Gallup, is busy thinking about the questions she might be asked during the interview for the national contest. She is also watching tapes of past pageants.

The Miss USA competition will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 21.

If you remember a couple years ago, Miss Alaska was alaskan native and very much looked it.

All I remember was the gal that looked Native, but was actually a Mexican. I'll have to do more research on this...

Ok, so Miss Alaska 2004 Christina Reasner, is enrolled to one of the Alaska Native Corporations. She does not "look" native to me. I love to see native people, who look native competing on the same level with mainstream society, that is how barriers are broken and fixed. On the other hand when people claim native ancestry, and do some really bad stuff, I wish they would keep their ancestry to themselves. I think it is really neat for this young lady, Onawa, to have such great achievements in her life, her education, and for her people. She is truely breaking barriers.

Hmm... was'nt Christina that I was thinking about so it might have been Miss Teen USA competition I'm thinking of?? Cause I remember the pic of the girl being all cute and round faced with black hair and dark skin.... Christina looks native to me, just that she has colored her hair lighter.

This is soooo exciting! I come from the great state of New Mexico, and everyone here is just so excited for her. I had the opportunity to meet Onawa at the New Mexico State Fair back in 2003 as she held the title of Miss Indian World, and she was so humble and kind. Best of luck to this young lady!!!
