I wish I could help, but I can't. I just wanted to say I feel for you. Sorry you are going through this. I hear alot of stories like this and it seems to me that folks have forgotten the option of saying 'no' as in 'No, I can't take on any more commissions' for whatever reason. If they don't have time, if their personal lives are in a turmoil, if they don't have the money to do a quality job on just the downpayment (which should be adequate), they should agree to take on another project and certainly shouldn't accept monies from someone.

I don't know what the other side of the story is, but I think she owes you 1) your old shawl, 2) a new quality shawl as ordered and 3) a refund of your deposit. She did not keep her end of the agreement up. She needs to do the right thing, make amends and then seriously consider what happened in this instance and if she should continue taking this kind of work.
