Box 457 McDermitt, Nevada 89421 Telephone: (775) 532-8259 Fax:(775) 532-8263 Chairwoman Karen Crutcher ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tribe can stay warmer this winter with Reno family's gift of firewood. But reservation hurt by August blaze still waits for federal government help, tribal official says Geralda Miller RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL Posted: 12/9/2005 A Reno woman who heard about the tribal members at the Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Reservation without firewood for the winter has found a way to help them. Fire on Aug. 29 swept through the reservation on the Nevada-Oregon border, destroying one house and 10 sheds, many containing wood used to heat homes. Robin Kazel said her family must abruptly move from their rented Mount Rose house because the well has run dry. She has a cord of wood and fencing to give the tribe. "We just wanted to help somebody else out," she said. The tribe continues to await federal assistance, said tribal chairwoman Karen Crutcher. "It's really good to know that people really do care," Crutcher said. "It's sad to say that about the federal government." Someone from the reservation was working in Reno this week and was able to collect the wood Thursday, she said. "As cold as it is, it is going to help them tremendously," she said. Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission, said Gov. Kenny Guinn's office also has made calls to find wood for the tribe. The Nevada Indian Commission is a state agency created to examine the social and economic well-being of American Indians. Rupert said the agency is exploring alternatives through the state Division of Forestry. "It looks hopeful," Rupert said. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tamra www.NDNnews.com "Providing news and information about Native American Issues & Causes" "Helping to make a difference for our people in Indian Country, one day at a time.
