Native American high school artists sought for UW-Superior art exhibit and scholarship


The Center for First Nations Studies and the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Superior are seeking American Indian high school students to exhibit their artwork at UW-Superior's 7th annual American Indian Art Scholarship Exhibit.


The exhibit showcases outstanding artwork created by Native American 9th- through 12th-grade students from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Participating juniors and seniors are eligible to compete for a $1,000 art scholarship to UW-Superior.


Students can submit up to two pieces in any medium. Items must be ready to exhibit. Deadline for submission is February 17, 2006. Artwork for the exhibit will be selected by a jury of UW-Superior art faculty.


The American Indian Art Scholarship Exhibit runs March 1-29, 2006, in the Kruk Gallery of the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center at UW-Superior. A reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

March 29 at which the student and regional American Indian artists will be present and the scholarship will be presented. "This is a great opportunity for American Indian high school students to have their artwork shown in the same exhibit as prominent American Indian regional artists," said Ivy Vainio, multicultural affairs specialist at UW-Superior. "Giving a $1,000 scholarship to the first place winner will help that student achieve his or her educational goal, and bring another talented art student to UW-Superior."


As part of the exhibit, local and regional American Indian artists will have their artwork on display.

The exhibit's featured artist will be Joe Geshick (Ojibwe). Other Regional Artists will include Steve Premo (Mille Lacs Ojibwe), George Perry (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe), Marcie McIntire (Grand Portage Ojibwe), Greg Johnson (Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe), Gordon Coons (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe), Sharon Nelis (Bad River Ojibwe), Matt McCauley (Ojibwe), Karen Savage (Fond du Lac Ojibwe), Jeff Savage (Fond du Lac Ojibwe), Eve Schultz (Sioux); Jerry Kirk (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe), Dennis White (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe), Cleora White (White Earth Ojibwe), Sue Zimmerman (Grand Portage Ojibwe) and Barb Lacapa-Morrow (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe).
