OK,
Maybe I'm stupid...but I just feel SOOOO lost. Mom is FB chata (but adopted by some white folks b/4 ICWA) and dad is part nDn (the g-g-g-g-grandma cherokee princess type). However it happened, I grew up n NE Okla. on Osage rez...woo-hoo! So here's my problem.. FLASHBACK 19!! N-e-wayz, I'm eatin USDA choice foods and developin' the commod bod and everything is cool... Mom's teaching me the language that she remembers and I'm learnin our traditions and it's all cool native world... THEN BAMMM! I move off to go to college in W tennessee. The first time I try to go to the doctor was b/c of an accident. So you know, I try to use Pawnee packet (denied) and then I get this shyt about my nDn card and tribes not being recognized in this state? What the hella? Why aren't cdib cards recognized here like back home? What's the deal...??? I know theres some kinda movement going on here to try to change it but where does it come from and is there a way to handle it or assert my rights? Where can I get more info??? Friggin Nahullos... |

There are laws in many states that are guaranteed to be recognized in other states; you need to talk to your tribe and get a clearer picture of your rights and benefits. You might have picked a bad state to attend college in, ya' think?

The closest native medical facilities to Tenn. I believe are on cherokee territory. My sister ran into the same problem. You won't find any in IL , IN, or MO either.

Blackbear is correct. There is a facility at Cherokee Indian Hospital and maybe one at Philadelphia, MS (Choctaws)?? Not sure.
You should be able to go to a regular hospital and then file with IHS within 72 hours and get your bill paid through contract health. I've never heard of a hospital, other than an IHS hospital or clinic, that takes CDIB cards though.

Yeah, I bet ur right b/c the Mississippi band of Choctaws rez is there around Philadelphia and I'm pretty sure that the Cherokee have some facilities. I'm in NW TN though...Oh, well. I'll check w/tribe and look into filing with IHS. Right now I've got really good insurance through work so I'm not so much worried bout me, but more so my mom. I just got her moved down here so can help take care of her. She is disabled and on a fixed income and the state program (Tenncare) is going down the drain! I'm just a little worried about getting her medical needs met especially since she's diabetic and all. I just think it sucks for states not to recognize tribes...but I guess thats a different tangent though...
