Cultural Similarities

A group of eight men from Hwacheon County in South Korea visited the rez the other day to sign a sisterhood agreement between their county and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. I had the opportunity to meet all of these men, and spoke with two of them. Two spoke fluent English and were the translators - the rest spoke only very broken English.

While talking with them, we began to talk about the similarities between their culture and Cherokee culture. They presented the Chief with a shadow box containing four miniature carved masks that were representative of their clans back in Korea. They also told of their beliefs about the turtle which are very similar to Cherokee beliefs. It was quite interesting.

Just goes to show that when people seem very, very different, there is almost always some common ground.

Singer,

I performed in Seoul for 2 summers. The Koreans have drums that look exactly and sound exactly like powwow drums. I ended up using their drums in our performance because they held out better in their humid climate.

and and. . . they like to eat... and I like to eat and, and *L

That's what got me interested in learning about other cultures.. seeing the similarities instead of the differences... You know, Tuscaroras' word for the #1 is ee-chee and so is Japan's.

Maybe we should stop posting this stuff. Anthropologists are probably lurking on this board and they'll jump out and say, "SEE I TOLD YOU THEY CAME ACROSS THAT LAND BRIDGE!!"

ROFLMAO... well the first three numbers in our language and theirs is similar but that's where it ends... That damn land bridge theory... so what if we did? We are still the first inhabitants of this side of the world right? ahhhhhhhhhhh well. Man that is cool though that they came and recognize them as a nation. Cuba recognizes the Tuscarora as a nation but that's because Mad Bear went there.. and contrary to popular belief, he did not represent the Tuscarora nation. He was a media hound.

We can say there was a bridge and the migration was the other way than what people currently believe. Think about it, there was too many of us here and they decided to travel to look for a new land where our chiefs could get tea and rice. If we send this iformation out some people would believe it. Specially if we get elders from all the various tribes to start talking about the great migration legend. Some of our ancestors even took some of our teachers and warriors to start a society (Samurai) who would look after their sacred people. If we all keep telling the same legends in a generation or so some crazy anthropologist would fall for it. What do you think.
