American Indian Bones found in CO
Human Bones Found By Students Are American Indian
Greeley Students Were Looking For Arrow Heads GREELEY, Colo. -- A group of eighth grade students from Greeley, on a field trip to look for arrowheads, found more than they expected: the bones of an American Indian. The students, from Dayspring Christian Schools, found a skull and bones in the Crow Valley Campground near Briggsdale on Tuesday, but didn't tell anyone about it until the next day. The Weld County Coroner's Office contacted forensic anthropologist Diane France of Colorado State University to examine to bones and determine if they were from a Native American or whether they were of more recent origin. On Thursday afternoon, investigators got their answer: the bones were of an American Indian of unknown age. The human remains will be turned over to State Archeologist Tom Carr. The students found the bones near the historic campground in the Pawnee National Grassland. The campground had been used as a camping spot for hundreds of years, according to historians. The students were on a trip to find arrow heads when several of them decided to range a little farther from the campground area. "I saw this round, white thing sticking out of the ground," Hunter said. "I started digging and found out it was a skull," Hunter Hoshiko told the Greeley Tribune. He and several other boys kept quiet about the find until the next day, when they returned to collect the skull and bones. Then they told a ranger who contacted the Weld County Sheriff's Office.
