Virginia tribes to mark Jamestown in England
Monday, May 9, 2005

Tribes in Virginia who were among the first to greet European settlers will be headed to England next year as part of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

The tribes have agreed to stage a Jamestown event in Gravesend, a town in England that is near the gravesite of Pocahontas. The event will take place in the spring or summer of 2006.

The 400th anniversary of Jamestown has stirred mixed feelings among Virginia's tribes, who are seeking federal recognition. Some say they are being asked to take part in the celebration but that their plight is being ignored.
