Wild horses sold by tribe saved from slaughter
Thursday, May 5, 2005

A wild horse sanctuary in South Dakota will take care of about 50 mustangs that were saved from slaughter after being sold by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

The tribe obtained bought 141 horses from the Bureau of Land Management in one of the first transactions of the agency's new wild horse program. But in trading 87 aging horses for younger ones, 35 animals ended up being slaughtered.

The tribe says it did nothing wrong but the BLM is reviewing the matter. The horses that were saved are headed to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary.
