Okay, guys. I know most of you don't like me, but I need your help. I've got to get this research report finished and I'm wanting to get some info from my fellow Natives, not some cold impersonal white sources.

The report is on a sensitive topic, but a very important one.
I'm doing it on suicide amongst Native youth.
So I'm wanting to know how many suicides there actually were from jan. 2004-now If you are comfortable with sharing, please feel free to post here or pm me. I want to make these statistics into real, human people so that the white academia can feel the impact of this terrible epidemic that is taking our children away. I want them to see that each number was a beautiful Native child and each loss was a tragedy.

Another thing, does drunk driving at high speeds and killing everybody that is in the car including yourself, count. That has happened twice in recent years in our area. Last week 2 people died including the driver. Few years ago, 4 teenaged boys died, including the driver.

Four years ago, my first cousin's son aged 18 ate a bullet. Primary reason he had schizophrenia. He had been diagnosed a couple of months prior to him doing it. Put a gun in his mouth in his dad's bedroom during a party and pulled the trigger. He had two younger brothers 17 and 15. All three boys were living with their dad. Mom was remarried and living in another city. Sad. I don't know if this helps.

yes, I'd say that counts. I was just looking and the tennage suicide rate for us is TWICE the national average. Can you believe that sh*t?!? That is way too many. I know I've had my problems, and the only thing that has saved me was having someone to talk to. why don't more kids have someone to talk to? what the hell are we all doing?

I already got the stats, i was hoping to be able to put a human face on the numbers. I'm includung the tragedy at Red Lake and some about Cheyenne River and their issues. I want the people who are going to be reading my report to know that there weren't just numbers, they were real kids, beautiful and unique. I want them to feel the depth of these losses and understand how they afffect the Native community.

Sorry I can't help with the stats. I am also glad you are trying to put a personal face in your report, to many in academia are looking from things in their ivory towers and no longer have any connection to the real world.

As for the quote above. There are many reasons why they no longer have anyone to turn to. Sometimes the adults that need to be in their lives are too selfish and only out for themselves. Others get so caught with work, trying to put food on the table and give the kids a better life, run out of time and energy to work with these kids. Sometimes they get caught inot the drugs and gangs and it is somewhat too late to help out, unless they get sent to boot camp or sometype of program.

I know I've heard the complaints about boy scouts, but they are a positive influence on the kids. I was a member, worked professionally for them,and am now volunteering to give back. scouts, 4-H, Big Bro/ Sis, Campfire, Future Farmers, ad nauseum will help these kids out. I like reading some the NC nations' programs working with their youth, trying to get them singing, dancing, and learning culture, it provides a positive influence.

Deus, just remember when your out of school, making the big bucks building weapons systems to not forget your roots and try to do something to help the younger generation.

isnt it *neat* that you can label something, submit it, have somebody quantify it, give it a number based on the lack of tragedy or too much something, return this number and be satisfied with it, and be like okay thats over, next

I would have liked to help on this one if I could have... but the only one I know of who commited suicide in the last year was mentally ill and thought to not be taking his medication anymore. Most of the time when you hear of our youth (my people) dying it's alchohol and vehicle related, or murder. And the only other suggestion I could have made was to pick a few names of those that had from all over, attach a picture and brief story of their life and what might have led to their demise at their own hands.
