WELCOME

Native Youth Alliance was founded in 1990 to provide and advocate for youth. We strive to ensure that traditional Native American cultural and spiritual ways continue for the coming generations. Since 1993, we have provided an annual program which provides children and youth with the opportunity to observe and participate in the ceremonies, gatherings and culture practiced by members and their families and nations for generations.

Native Youth Alliance's end goal is to establish a national network of culturally appropriate homes for Native American children in need. These homes would provide residents with a strong foundation in traditional culture and spirituality. They would be primarily for, but not limited to, those whose parents are incarcerated.

Native Youth Alliance and its members share a common belief in the need for a balance between spiritual, physical, mental and emotional development; and the necessity of a healthy environmental, cultural, linguistic, governmental and economic foundation. All work to preserve traditional Native American practices, by providing them for others and practicing them in their own lives.


ANNUAL PROGRAM

Winter Dance / Inaugural PowWow -
Initiated in 1997, this event is held on or near January 19th every year at a time to honor our Elders and remember those who have passed away. Every fourth year it is held as the Inaugural Pow Wow to pray for the incoming Presidential Administration and to remind them that whenever changes the government goes through, the indigenous peoples remain strong and our traditional ways endure.

Spring Equinox -
In keeping with our goal of continuing traditional spiritual beliefs, Native Youth Alliance will observe the beginning of the Spring season. This will be done for every equinox and solstice during the year.

Spring Events in Recognition of the Restoration of the Buffalo Nation -
May is the moon of the Spring calving, when the new bison will be born. Native Youth Allance has chosen this time to host a series of events held in recognition of this new life; of the renewed strength it brings the Buffalo Nation; and of all those who are working to support them. Held annually on the weekend after Mother's Day, this is a four-day series of events including the lighting of a sacred fire, sunrise ceremonies, a pow wow and other prayer ceremonies.

Summer Youth Program -
NYA will hold a summer program featuring a week-long "Cultural Camp" for children and youth that will culminate in a youth pow wow. Day trips to local sites will also be held throughout the summer.

Healing Global Wounds Pow Wow -
The first Healing Global Wounds Pow Wow was held in 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of a conference to discuss the nuclear cycle and environmental injustice, particularly as it affects indigenous peoples. Because we believe that these ceremonies must be held four times, NYA has held this event in Washington, DC on the first weekend of October to remember the signing in 1992 of the ban on testing of nuclear weapons at the Nevada Test Site. Beginning in 2002, the event will be moved to mid-September to remember the events of September 11, 2001.

Tipi on the Mall for Native American Heritage Month -
In past years, NYA has been called on to participate in Native American Heritage Month activities sponsored by various government agencies sponsored by various government agencies and other organizations. In 1998, we held vigils marking the beginning and end of the month, a Veteran's Day pipe ceremony, and our annual Thanksgiving Day Fast. In 1999, we held our first 30-day gathering; on the first of the month, we put up a tipi on the grounds of the Washington Monument and lit a prayer fire. We kept the fire burning and maintained a presence continuously until the last day of the month.

That first year was a beginning, a time to recognize the infants, the Spring, the East direction. Highlights of the year included a Veteran's Day pipe ceremony and the first Native American Church service ever held on the Mall. The gathering was held again in 2000, in honor of the youth, the Summer, and the South. In 2001, we looked to the Adults, the Fall and the West; and to the responsibilities adults have as caretakers of both the young and old. In 2002, our fourth year, we will honor our Elders and remember those who have passed on, the Winter season, and the North direction. Highlights of the month include a Veteran's Day Pow Wow on the 9th and 10th, a pipe ceremony on the 11th, and our annual Thanksgiving Day fast. On the 29th, we will hold a candlelight vigil to honor all survivors of violence, from Wounded Knee and Sand Creek to Oklahoma City and the WTC/ Pentagon/ Flt. #93.


WHAT WE'VE DONE

The year 2001 marked the completion of Native Youth Alliance's first eleven years. Listed here are some of the things we've accomplished in that time.

Sponsoring programs for children and youth from the Washington, DC area. Activities have included workshops and practice sessions on traditional music, dancing, crafts, cooking, etc.
Attending other spiritual gatherings, prayer ceremonies, and conferences nationwide, including gatherings at Akwesasne (NY), Ward Valley (CA), Big Mountain (AZ), and Monterey (Mexico).
Holding the annual "Tipi on the Mall" 30-day vigil for Native American Heritage Month, every November since 1999.
Holding the Winter Dance / Inaugural Pow Wow every January since 1997 in the Washington, DC area. Held January 19th, 1997 and 2001 in honor of the Presidential Inaugural, and other years as event to honor our Elders and remember those we've lost.
Holding the Spring Events in recognition of the Restoration of the Buffalo Nation every May since 1999. Held to honor the birth of the new Buffalo calves, and to remember their importance in the lives of the People.
Holding prayer ceremonies in honor of our Veterans every Veteran's Day since 1996.
Holding the first of four annual Open Council / Conferences on January 2002.
Working with the Gwich'in Steering Committee, the Ft. Mojave Tribal Council, and others to hold vigils in DC in support of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Ward Valley, Yucca Mountain, and other issues threatening Native Peoples and all of Creation.
Supporting and accompanying the Peace & Dignity Journey 1992 through eastern Kansas, attending ceremonies in Kansas City, at Leavenworth Penitentiary and on the Kickapoo Reservation. Participating in Peace & Dignity Journey 1996, organizing spiritual runs in and around Washington, DC.
Supporting Native American inmates in their right to practice their traditional spiritual ways. Visiting with inmates at FCI Schuykill (PA), FCI Cumberland (MD), and Leavenworth Penitentiary (KS). Brought pow wow to FCI Manchester (KY) in November 1994 and 1995.
Supporting many Native peoples and Nations by distributing literature about their situations, circulating petitions, and providing talks and video showings on the issues they face.

I'm not saying, "put this on the back burner until...." when I say this.... every year before Christmas Paul sets up an annual fund raiser for a native american charity... please bring this back up again next fall so that it could be considered for that fund raiser as well!
