Suspect held after man dragged behind vehicle

GALLUP, New Mexico (AP) -- A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the dragging of a man behind a vehicle, which left the victim with burn-like abrasions over half his body.

John Pete Talamante was booked Friday on charges of kidnapping, aggravated battery and assault with intent to commit a violent felony.

Talamante was being held without bond in the McKinley County Detention Center, said Gallup police Chief Sylvester Stanley. More arrests were likely, he said.

The victim, 32-year-old Fausto Arellano, remained hospitalized in critical condition. He had been bound by the ankles and pulled by a rope for some 4,000 feet on Easter morning, according to police.

Stanley said narcotics could be an "indirect motive" in the dragging, but added that officers had no indication that Arellano was involved in drugs.

The single father has two sons, ages 16 and 11.

"This man is like Superman to his sons. He is their idol," said Pedro Andablo, Arellano's former brother-in-law.

Police who traced the route of the dragging say the rope snapped or Arellano broke free, and he crawled to the side of the road and collapsed.

Gallup, a town of 20,000 just east of the Arizona state line, is known as one of the largest American Indian trading centers in the Southwest.

Eurell T. Malone, owner of the M & M Trading Co., where Arellano has worked for 10 years, said the crime was senseless.

"You have to be some kind of animal to drag a person behind a car," Malone said. "Everyone's asking, 'Why him? He was a kind and gentle man."'

That's harsh. Something liked that happened just outside of Vancouver, BC about a month ago. Two kids one 15 and the driver was 16 fled a gas station cause they didn't want to pay the $12.30 at the pump. The gas station attendant tried to stop them and they somehow dragged him underneath the vehicle. The police followed the blood on the road to a party. The young driver was charged with 2nd degree murder. This place is getting messed up.

OMG i wouldnt do that to a lame dog.. let alone another human being... How sad of a world we live in when people intentionally cause harm to one another fer the thrill of it and when people turn thier heads when another human being is being hurt... My gosh how cruel can people be... then think its funny... everything seems to start off as unintentional.. or as a joke.. and we keep shruggin our shoulders.. yeah being bullies is Just humor... SIGH...... it seems it gets worse by the week.. more tragedies more hurt more pain..

This sounds similar to that case in Texas a few years ago
where an African-American man was dragged to death
behind a truck driven by 3 Ku Klux Klan members...what is
this world coming to? All you read about in the papers is
murder, mayhem, bombings, etc.

I remember that Alamosaurus... that was absolutely horrendous! He was dragged so fast he was decapitated. I cried reading about that ...

I hope Arellano heals quickley from his abrasions and Im happy that is all he suffered. If he's his own kid's hero, he must be some kind of great guy!

This is just terrible...need I say more. I hope this gentleman recovers soon and his teens do not take revenge on the useless trash of this world.
