Two South Carolina tribes win state recognition
Friday, February 18, 2005

Two tribes won recognition from the state of South Carolina on Thursday.

The state's Commission for Minority Affairs voted in favor of the Waccamaw Indian People and the Pee Dee Nation. Members of both tribes were ecstatic.

“I don’t have to prove who I am anymore," Pee Dee Chief Carolyn Chavis Bolton was quoted as saying.

The commission acted on four other groups that sought recognition. The Eastern Cherokees and the Wassamasaw Tribe were designated as Indian groups but did not win recognition. The Chaloklowa Chickasaw Indian People and the Fields Indian Family-Pine Hill Indians were rejected outright.

The Catawba Nation is South Carolina's only federally recognized tribe.

Eastern Cherokees in South Carolina? No, I think we're based in North Carolina. This is why we don't like the idea of state recognition.

Sounds like someone didn't do their research before writing the article. I do believe journalists are taught to check the facts before writing something.

Unfortunately those are the facts! Things are just backwards here in South Carolina!!

But to clarify, The Eastern Cherokee Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina is a GROUP, not a tribe. They don't pretend to be a tribe and didn't try to be recognized as a tribe. They are just an organization.

To quote thier site, they are:

These guys claim to be endorsed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee. They aren't.

Don't know about that, just wanted to clarify that they aren't a tribe.

Do tribes even endorse each other?
