Professor says Churchill hired because he was 'Indian'

A former University of Colorado professor says Ward Churchill received tenure because he claimed to be Indian.

Former communications department chairman John Bowers said Churchill's heritage was never mentioned explicitly. But since the school wanted to expand its minority faculty, he was fast-tracked, Bowers said.

At various times, Churchill has claimed Cherokee, Cree, Cree and Metis ancestry. He lacks membership in any federally recognized tribe and says critics, including many Indian activists, leaders and scholars, have no right to question his heritage.

Might be time for some of the 'professors' to get off their academic asses and take a look around! no fool is as dangerous as an 'educated' fool!

this is'nt surprising... with the exception of the rare few, it's been my perception that most colleges like their "indian" teachers and advisors to look and sometimes act rather white. You say you're indian, that's good enough for them. Might not hurt to wear a bolo tie either... or have hair long enough to be in a ponytail.

Its like that everywhere. That's why employment equity programs don't work very often. Numerous people "claim" they are a certain minority but they then don't offer any cultural diversity. One of the sole reasons they are hired is they are supposed to provide the dominant society an opportunity to learn from another ethnic grouping. Many "Natives", "Indians", "Aboriginals", who are hired because of their knowledge do not know anything of their own culture. It enables those in management to put a tangible number on the level of visible minorities they purport to hire. Additionally, the blood quantum usually doesn't matter because as long as somebody self identifies as a specific race or ethnic group, that is usually good enough. Many of these same people then turn around and deny their own heritage when asked about it. Nobody in management questions whether these individuals claims are true. Where I work a person is a National Parole Board senior management person and now she is claiming that she has First Nation ancestry. Everybody has been lauding her for her outstanding work for "our people". She has been in the government for years but only "came out of the closet" with her ancestry in the last two years. I don't even know if she has any Aboriginal blood in her or not though. It just steams me when you are actually an Indian you have to work harder than everybody and work longer hours, just to be seen as an equal by your non[Indian colleagues.

It's not only their NA profs they want to "whiten up"; my father-in-law is the only Jewish professor at a Catholic university...they like all their minorities there to smile when the issue of diversity comes up, and keep your mouth shut otherwise....

Ward just may be a very low blood quantum (1/16) (1/32) Indian or he may be Indian at heart. Didja ever think of that?

Who needs proof of native blood or enrollment? I think that if Ward truly believes he's Indian or Metis, just accept it!

NDN Country needs Ward Churchill like Muslims need al Qaeda. He's not just a wannabe. He's a fraud and a liar, and as a professor, he's just not believable. Even if he is NDN, it doesn't change the fact that he's a liability to CU. If UC cares about their academic reputation, they should can this clown.
