School hasn't taken action on prof who violated law
Tuesday, December 14, 2004

A Fort Lewis College professor who has sparked an outcry among Indian students violated federal law, Indian Country Today reports.

Andrew Gulliford, director of the Center of Southwest Studies, violated eight students' rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, college president Brad Bartel said. But the school hasn't taken action against Gulliford and won't ask him to resign.

Gulliford angered Indian students by using their names, classwork and other information without their consent. He published his observations in a controversial journal article.

Native Americans make up about 18 to 20 percent of the student population.
