Chaparral has been used for many centuries by native Americans for the treatment of cancer, colds, wounds, bronchitis, warts and ringworm. The medical profession had generally been sceptical of this treatment, saying that it could be dangerous. According to new research, the extract apparently does shrink some tumors. Chaparral tea had some popularity until the 1970s when the FDA said that there was no proof it was any good – it also said there was a risk of liver and kidney damage. According to this new research, the extract seems to be completely safe as well as beneficial. The refined extract used in the research is called M4N, it comes from the Chaparral shrub. Eight patients with advanced neck and head cancer had the extract injected into their tumors. The patients had not responded to other forms of treatment. The aim of this trial was safety – the researchers wanted to see if the extract was safe. They found the patients tolerated the M4N well – there was no sign of liver or kidney damage. The scientists were surprised when the tumors began to shrink. A new, larger study is now planned to see just how effective M4N is. Scientists presented their findings at the International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in Washington, USA.
