When we are born we each have our differences, whether it is our sex, our Ethnicity, or our physical attributes. Differences are normal, that’s what makes us unique. There are no standards that judge normality. A person’s ethnicity, origin, country, and upbringing determine ones ideas and thoughts about what’s considered normal. Stereotypes have developed about various groups overtime.
Being born into an American Indian family has had an effect on my thoughts and Ideas about what’s right, what’s wrong, and about who I am. It has also taught me how to hold my head up and be proud. I have experienced discrimination because of what and who I am. All races have stereotypes that people believe are true. People have their stereotypes about American Indians. I have heard all stereotypes ranging from “Indians are drunks” to “Indians still live in Tee-Pees.” An example of a stereotype that I have had the misfortune of experiencing was when my cousin and I was in a restaurant and we were talking about how we have never drank alcohol. A Caucasian friend turned around and said “what? I never heard of an Indian who didn’t drink.” He assumed that because we are Indian we had to drink. All races have problems with alcoholism and drugs. It is easy to focus on the American Indian because there are so few of us. Also old westerns helped portray Indian people as “drunk Indians” which stuck in people’s minds and they pass the misconception on to their children. I have even heard stereotypes come from the mouths of teachers, educators, people who are suppose to know and teach the truth. The other day one of my professors made a comment about an Indian man that was his roommate in college. He said that he had to teach the Indian man how to read and help him with his English. The way he said it seemed to me that he thought all American Indian people have literacy problems. It upset me but I said nothing and I let him continue to wallow in his ignorance. I have also heard of another professor that made a comment to an entire class that Indians were the dirtiest people there were. He said they polluted the rivers and streams by washing clothes and bathing in them. An American Indian student was present in class at the time. Ignorance and a persons upbringing is what forms their opinions and beliefs. Stereotypes towards American Indians are used in the sports world. Some examples are the tomahawk chop, chief Wahoo, and crazy outfits that an American Indian would never wear. We are seen as fictional characters. What would happen if another race were used in this way? You never see an African American mascot or an Asian mascot or any other race for that matter. Even though American Indians have protested against the use of our heritage and race as mascots nothing has changed. It has gone on so long that people see nothing wrong with it and do not see it from the American Indian point of view. Another misconception that I have been asked about is if I get any money from tribally owned Casinos. First of all not all Tribe have Casinos. A big percentage of the Tribes who have casinos are not receiving a ton of money. Most of the money received goes back into the casino or to programs that improve tribal situations. The money is not always paid out to tribal members. A lot of people are against American Indian tribes owning casinos. For years and years Indian people have struggled and now they have found something to help gain some tribal revenue. Some people do not like this and think we should not get ahead. It is okay for Vegas and Atlantic City to profit from casinos but when the Indian people do the same thing people want to put a stop to it. I have also heard that people believe Indians can go to any college they choose for free. I wish this stereotype were true. Believe me I would take advantage! There are a few American Indian Universities such as Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence Kansas. Even though it is for American Indian students there still is tuition and fees for room and board and books. Nothing comes free to American Indian people. I have also had people say to me that American Indians don’t have to pay taxes. I had to check into this myself when I heard it. Another misconception I wish was true. Every year I’m always in line to get my Taxes filed. American Indians are people of two worlds, on one hand we are Indian first, on the other hand we have to conform our selves differently in public, work, and school. Our teachings conflict with American society, as we know it. Indians have only been American citizen for only about seventy years. Our Grandparents tells us how they were mistreated when they were children and how they were looked down upon because of who they are. We are strangers in our own land but love the country that was once ours. American Indians have the highest percentage rate in military service. Being an American Indian is a constant battle. We have to stand up for our beliefs and fight against the stereotypes, even with all the challenges faced by American Indians I wouldn’t change who I am.

I've been called everything under the sun, but I can guarauntee you that the morons who think they've got balls to say sh*t like that to me usually never do that again. I will gladly throw down and get right in their ugly little pink piggy faces. It shocks the hell out of them when I do it, too. I guess they think just because I'm a girl i won't cheerfully beat the living crap out of them. oh well their mistake.
"Let your lessons be ingrained in the very sinews of your foes. let them carry the physical memory of the ramifications of their tresspass forever. Scaring the hell out of them is the only lesson these pitiful beasts will remember, so rattle their little cages, burst their happy fuzzy bubbles. Why should you make them comfortable? why should you turn the other cheek? We've been doing it for far too long, my friends. And it is the same despicable behavior of a dog who rolls on it's back and licks the feet of the one who just kicked it. Were we descended from dogs or from warriors? which is it?" -Deus Ex, lessons for life.

i guess everyone has to deal with it on a daily basis. Be it blatant (stupid drunk indian) or discreetly intentional (watching YOU shop - meanwhile that white teen age girl over there just stole three outfits) - racism is there.
the lastest of my experiences involves a SHOPPER'S DRUG MART in NORTH BATTLEFORD, SASK involving two employees INEZ and i don't remember the other one's name but i think it was heather. i'm not going to hide where this occurred because i don't want to. i had been going to this particular store for over 15 years for my medication and so had the rest of my family (7 siblings, both parents and most of my nieces and nephews) I walked in with my 2 year old to pick up my daughter's prescription and my sister was in there shopping and i hadn't seen her for a week or so, so we of course were talking in front of the pharmacy pick up area. and my girl walked away to the back checkout (about 10 feet away from me) but i could still see her and she was never out of my eyesight. i saw her pick up a kinder egg and walk over (past me) to the seating area where you wait for your prescription - there is a busy beads there she always goes and plays with it. when this employee walk over to my daughter and watches her. then i'm noticing her and then she says to me "are you going to buy that for her?" i'm thinking what business is it of hers what i buy my daughter and just ignore her. so then it was time for me to go and i realize i left my wallet in my van and ask my sister to stay with my girl while i go for it. meanwhile while i'm outside the lady called security on a two year old - who had started to eat the egg. i come back inside unaware that security was called on my girl and proceed to try to pay for her kinder egg. my sister lets me in on that little piece of info and i'm thinking "azzhole!" so i go up through the checkout and pay for her egg with another one - since she shredded her wrapper. i put the other egg back in the display and try to walk out. when inez says to me "aren't you going to take your egg?" i say calm as can be "i'm payin for the one my girl ate" and i asked her why she called security on a two year old? to which she could only put her head down an walk away. when i get home my sister calls me and lets me in on inez and heather callin me a "dumb azz indian woman" and that i was totally rude and ignorant while i was YELLING at them at the check out when i asked her why she did what she did. she was saying this to the pharmacy staff while my sister was waiting behind another person. she must have forgot what my sister looked like or something or didn't think we were related or somethang - we totally don't look the same. anyways my sister lets her have it and calls for the manager who wasn't there - only a supervisor who was standing there listening to inez and heather bad mouth me. then my parents and sisters, nieces and nephews and friends of the family over the next few days proceed to call and let the manager know that they will be withdrawing their business - over 30 people. meanwhile the manager talks to me i let him know what happened and he let me know that both employees lied to him as to what happened. he makes both employees call me to apologize and i let both women know that i own my own home here and have one in oklahoma, three vehicles, and both my husband and i both have very well paid full time jobs. just to rub it in and let them know i am better than both of them. i have never returned to the store since. the manager tried for months to get my family to return.... sorry for it being soooooooooo looooooonnnngggg.....

This breaks my heart
When I was young (and thought Star Trek was real) I believed that this kind of ingnorant hatred was a remnant of the past. Reading this now reminds me that I'm "not in Kansas anymore". When I teach what Scouting calls "Indian Lore", I make sure that the one lesson that cannot be lost is respect. Respect for indian culture, accomplishments, and your struggles both past and present. I wish I could do more to correct my fellow whites.
Please, remember that an a*****e is an a*****e, but not all white men are a*****es. Some of us try to walk in a good way. The rest just make us all look bad. Trying to find the right path, -Sleeping Bear |
