ABA Welcomes First All-Native American Basketball Team SAN JOSE CA Jennifer Tedlock 4/9/2004 History is in the making, basketball fans. For the first time ever, an all-Native American professional sports team is in the works. The Native America Team is looking to join the American Basketball Association. The team CEO, VP, GM, and Assistant GM announced Thursday that three free-agent tryouts are scheduled for July. "We would be making history," Spider Ledesma, Native America President and CEO, told the Native American Times. "We're going to be joining the ABA." The team is likely to be based out of San Jose, California, but other cities are also being considered, a press release said. Free-agent tryout camps include: -- Billings, Montana at the Billings Senior High School on July 10 -- Rapid City, South Dakota at the Civic Center on July 17 -- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at a location to-be-announced on July 24 -- Three others camps are possible later in Phoenix, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Pendleton, Oregon The best players from the camps will be invited to the Veteran's Camp in October to compete for a final roster spot. Native America is looking for the "absolute best players", Ledesma told the Native American Times. Native men ages 18 and up can fill-out an application online at www.NativeAmericaCamps.com. Tryout fees are as follows: -- $175 online with credit card only -- $200 money order (must be sent via U.S. Priority 3-Day Mail) -- $225 cash only (walk-ins who register before 4 p.m. Friday prior to tryout or who registered online but did not pay) Questions? Call Spider Ledesma, President and CEO of Native America at 601-799-1880, VP Clinton Pilcher at 408-712-5890, GM Rafael Carrillo at 408-781-7987, or Assistant GM William Ledesma at 408-561-3789. |
