The tribe now owns its first piece of property since the signing of the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott by Chief Sealth (Seattle). The half-acre parcel will be used for a cultural center, provided the tribe can raise $1.5 million for the project. The tribe's petition for federal status was denied by former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb, who rescinded an decision made during the final days of the Clinton administration.
