Robeson Drive-By Shooting Claims Life Of 11-Year-Old Investigators Look For Suspects In Case POSTED: 11:39 a.m. EST December 30, 2003 UPDATED: 5:12 p.m. EST December 30, 2003 LUMBERTON, N.C. -- Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting that killed a 11-year-old girl. Nicole Oxendine was killed Monday night in a drive-by shooting. Investigators say 11-year-old Nicole Oxendine was asleep in her relative's trailer late Monday night in Robeson County, south of Lumberton when someone in a white Sedan shot into the window of the trailer at least six times. One of the shots hit Oxendine in the head. She died at the scene. "I can't understand why somebody would kill her," said Yvonne Locklear, Oxendine's aunt. "[It's] terrible, terrible, especially when you go in the house and see all the blood in that bed and know that she was asleep and somebody came through and did that to her." Neighbors in the area are also stunned about Oxendine's death, especially those with children of their own. "I thought about, 'Man, what if this happened to us or something.' Yeah, it's scary," neighbor Leigh Gomez said. Authorities say So far, investigators do not have any suspects in the case. They are not sure if it was a random shooting or if someone inside the home was the target. Robeson Investigators Look For Car In Connection With Drive-By Shooting Nicole Oxendine Shot To Death In Trailer POSTED: 5:51 p.m. EST December 31, 2003 ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. -- Robeson County investigators said they have leads in a drive-by shooting that killed an 11-year-old girl. Authorities believe someone in a white Ford Taurus may have been connected to a drive-by shooting in Robeson County that killed Nicole Oxendine. A bullet entered a mobile home where Nicole Oxendine was sleeping. She died instantly from a shot to the head. A second bullet narrowly missed her sister, Deanne, who was sleeping in the same bed, just inches away. "I heard something like firecrackers and something hot, like something was stinging me," Deanne said. Investigators do not believe Nicole was the target. They have no motive for the drive-by shooting, but they do think the mobile home was singled out. "We feel like the mobile home was targeted. There were two other residences right near there and neither was hit," said Maj. Randal Patterson, of the Robeson County Sheriff's Office. Witnesses think the shots were coming from a white Ford Taurus. Investigators are now working with the Department of Motor Vehicles, trying to identify any white Ford Tauruses registered to an address in the area. Deanne Oxendine said she wants more than just answers. She wants her little sister back. "I just wish it would have hit me and not her, so she could be here. She was too young," she said. Oxendine will be buried Saturday. Family members said she did not get to enjoy her Christmas presents, so her sisters plan to put some dolls that she got for Christmas inside her coffin. First Shane Zotigh and now this. When will the authorities get
around to using the RICO statute and conspiracy laws to take these gang members off the streets and lock them up (preferably permanently) so that the rest of us can be safe?
