The Memory of Kwan Bennett - Choreographer of Thunderbird American Indian Dancers
Oisyo everybody,
I will put out my poem later. First, I want to take the time to tell you all about my friend, Kwan Bennett. Her Native Name is Deer Woman. She has been my friend for three months before she passed away suddenly on October 2004. She always had a sense of humor and always had a smile on her face - you just want to love her. When I met her, I felt that we had a mother-daughter bond right away. We talked on the phone twice and met each other twice. She gave me hugs and kisses. The last time that she came to my circle was on August 2004, to teach us how to do round dance. On our first phone conversation, we got a chance to know each other. Moreover, she was willing to teach me how to do a fancy shawl dance and told me that I can home to her house. The second and last phone conversation, she told me not to come because it was raining and she was not feeling well. Kwan has been the choreographer for the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers for 14 years before she passed. She left behind a daughter, who will be 17 years old soon. She was dedicated into teaching Native Americans how to dance and loved her Cherokee culture so dearly. I love her and may the Great Spirit bless her beautiful soul.
