Charlie Chibitty
Charles Chibitty, Last Surviving Comanche Code Talker, Dies
Thursday July 21, 2005 10:29am Posted By: Kevin King Tulsa - The last surviving member of the elite Comanche Code Talkers from World War Two has died. Charles Chibitty died Wednesday following a long illness. He was 83. Chibitty was born in Medicine Park, Oklahoma in 1921, but raised his family in Tulsa following the war. He was one of sixteen other Comanche Indians that were known as the Code Talkers. They were a part of the Army's 4th Signal Company and used their unique language to keep enemies from intercepting allied messages during World War II, especially during the Normandy invasion. He earned several medals for his service, including the World War II Victory Medal, the European Theater of Operations Victory Medal, the Europe African Middle East Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Chibitty and the Comanche Code Talkers were honored by the French Government in 1989, where they were presented with the Chevalier of the National Order of Merit. In 1999, he was recognized at a Pentagon Ceremony, where he received the Knowlton Award, which recognizes those who have contributed significantly to Army Intelligence.

It is truly a sad day.... my prayers to his family and friends.
On a related note, what's the status of the bill making its way through congress to honor ALL native code talkers, not just the Navajos? Mr. Chibitty's passing just demonstrates the urgent need for this bill to recognize these brave men who were not only committed to this country, but also to their peoples and cultures.

For all of us that new Charlie and for all of those that met him; in no way can anyone I now say he didn't touch us in some way or another. I have fond memories of talking to Charlie at a dance here and there. I remember my first dance at Cache OK, a contest, I was late getting in and wanted to contest. The regestry ladies didn't want to let me until Charlie and Woogie came over to intercede for me. I didn't win nor come close but I still got to dance.
Thanks Charlie, for everything and those kind words. My thoughts are with you and your family. Rest well and peaceful. Your friend.

I did'nt really know him.. was introduced to him 4 years ago and did understand when I met him what a gem he was. It saddens me to think that a man such as himself is gone. My most sincere condolences to his family, friends and community.

When I first moved to Oklahoma years ago. Mr. Chibitty was one of the first people to speak to me at a powwow. He was always so friendly and always said hi to me like I was an old friend. I pray that he has found peace and is happily reunited with his loved ones who have gone before him.

Saddened by the loss
We had the honor of meeting Charles Chibitty when he was guest speaker at a Native American Heritage Month event in Washington, DC; we were the drum and dancers for the event. He joined us at the drum for a veterans song, and spoke with us during the meal which followed. He was a very kind man, and we appreciate that our youth had the opportunity to meet such a great man. We will all suffer the loss of his kindness, experience and wisdom.
