In honor of Mary Ada Franks
I would just like to pay my respects to my paternal grandmother Mary Ada Franks. From what I know this lady lived a hard life. At a young age she married a white man, my grandfather. They had a boy, my father. They lived for 2 years in peace, until they moved to be with my grandfathers family. My great grandparents insisted that because Mary was a Native American, my grandpa must get a divorce or lose his inheritance and be cut off from his family. He did divorce Mary Franks and take her son from her and sent her to her parents on a bus. She was not allowed contact with her child and he was taught to hate her and her people. She had other children, and then she was killed when my father was 13 by a drunk driver. Even in her death there was hatred, bitterness and anger. My father who had been brought up to hate and be ashamed of her, refused to go to her funeral.
I just think that it is awful when these things happen to women, and wanted to pay my respects to a woman who I will never know while still on this earth. Rest in Peace Mary Ada Franks. |
