I doint necessarily think we need to just stop everything and go back to calico prints and cotton dresses but I would like to see a lot of the dancers tone down a bit...My daughter Camille is a champion jingler and I dont want her being too over board.... she is still respectful of the style..... this is jingle not fancy shawl

Just curious as to why you're quoting me. I have seen some beautiful jingle dresses of all different colors and styles... some a little tacky, and some very pretty. I like to see both new and old style of clothing. I do like to see the older style of dress still hanging on though...

This has been interesting to read about the different styles of old and contemp..
Your probably going to say 'stupid white girl, what does she know'? I’ve been jingle dancing for 10 years now, I started way back in 1998, then I fell ill with cancer, but never stopped dancing, even through all my treatment, this to me brought me the strength that I needed to dance. I have carried on dancing, and have learnt many things from other people's views of what to and what not to do, what to and what not to wear, you have to dance old style, but you cannot wear hair ornaments or carry a fan, if your contemp, you can wear hair plumes and carry a fan. I know that it has kicked off again over on the European powwow's, if your old style, you must dress and dance old style. If you dance contemp, you must dress and dance contemp. Now, I have been doing a lot of research lately through watching video's, reading books and watching clips on 'you tube,' and on watching a majority on there I still see a mixture of both old and contemp when it is meant to be an 'all out old style dance' shall we say. I still see ladies wearing plumes and carrying a fan but with the old style dance steps. and vice versa for the contemp. Is it purely because the lady may do both styles at one gathering, or that the fact that there are so many different styles as to where you come from? There seems, also to be a lot of similarity on the outfits as well, and sometimes gets a bit confusing on who is who, old style or contemp as the colours and style look the same. Although I have been dancing old style since I started, and I have been told that I dress old style, I have always carried a fan, but have now been told by a German lady that this is wrong. I want to do this right, and do not want to be frowned upon purely because there is something not quite right. I know that the you guys do not like white people doing their style of dancing and you seem to think that we are doing it as joke, and we have been called fakes, but it is totally the opposite, we follow traditions and the etiquette that surrounds a pow wow. We do have visitors occasionally from the States which does mean a great deal to us, and I’m sure that if we were doing something wrong it would be pointed out straight away. The powwow scene has been going in the UK as far back, and perhaps longer then the 50's, so in the last 40's years we must of been doing something right? Does is really matter that much in what everyone has on, or part of their regalia so long as they are enjoying themselves. I thought the word 'Powwow' was to meet old and new friends and generally go to enjoy themselves. Celebrate new life and remember those gone by with honour songs...... this is just my personal opinion, and in no way wish to offend anyone in the slightest. I love jingle dancing, I love the gatherings, the meeting and greeting, I love the drum, isn't this what matters most, you enjoy yourself.

old style outfits
wow, you have learned so much and alot more , we take great pride in our culture and your ability to try to understand this is impressive i commend you and feel honored that you walk this spiritual lifestyle it takes someone very special to do and chose what you have accomplished. please carry on, this is a healing dance. i make these types of dresses and if one thing is clear with the changing times it is often hard to distinguish the contemp and old style. i was taught by my granny's to never wear eagle feathers or carry fans as long ago women were not allowed to carry spiritual items, and sad to say that these items are no longer revered as such. my grannys told me that cetain things were given to woman and men example the sweat lodge was given to the men because women have the gift to cleanse every month and men enter the sweat lodge to cleanse in this way. now women and men sweat together. it seems to me that culture and traditon are changed to accomadate the feelings of people. i am a pipe carrier but have chosen to leave it in the care jof the elder who gave it to me until such time when i feel ready. i feel way to young and maybe someday..... i smudge and pray and give thanks for what i have. i live simple and do alot of beadwork it gives me patience. all my family members dance but i make certain they are ready for that style. i nver say it in a negative way but rather sit sown with my grandchildren and talk with them the importance of these things. my grand girls learn my teachings and i make sure they are solid. i lived wth grandmothers before they passed on and i can tell you they passed along alot of teachings and it because of them i am who i am today. i encourage you to follow who you have become and do what you feel is right in your heart and open up your dreams and try to follow them because this is a special place for spirits and you learn alot and get many gifts from this special way of communication.

Thankyou Thunderbirdwoman.
I have learnt a great deal in my years, and even studied Native American Culture whilst I was at school, I love the history that surrounds you, how you celebrate life, how you have to fight for what is yours. etc etc. I have been asked many times if you would dance another style, to which I always say no. Jingle dress means something to me, and that is why I intend on dancing until I can no more. I have seen jingle dancers come and go in the last 10 years, and it is these people that really do not have the believes that I may have. I have seen people selling their jingle dresses, even on e-bay which leads me to believe that they do not really know the true meaning and its values. Yes I do have 2 jingle dresses and I am in the process of making a third, but all mine are still with me, I would never dream of selling a jingle dress purely for the fact that I see it as being wrong. They were both made for me by my own mom, which is another reason why I would never sell. My one ambition is to come to the States and dance with everyone else, but I have been told that you should really wait and be invited and also granted permission, this maybe wrong, and I am still waiting lol... but in the mean time, I am still on a big learning curve as what to wear and do, etc. The more I learn the better I get.

i go to tradish and contest powwows and everytime i go the drums call you feel .....a sense of belonging. i encourage you to come see and feel the spiritual side of this way of life. i promise you will not be disappointed. not saying that you don't feel it over there but saying that the to experience the ultimate sense of spiritual awakening is to walk on the dance floor and be a part of the circle. my daughter passed on last year and she was a twin and both are ladies traditional dancers and our grieving was filled with the knowledge that in this circle she lived and danced i feel happy that we have this great culture that the family we have is comforting and full in the knowledge that our spiritual side carries on, that is my comfort and my beliefs. i will be danced back in this coming year after observing our year of grieving. ekosi
