Time To Take A Break!

What are some of the things we can discuss about those little frustrations we get when we are constructing our dresses?

When I have about 4 or 5 layers of design and the needle keeps gumming up. The thread keeps breaking after about 10 stitches over and over. What do you all do for that? I clean the needle but then again after 10 stitches it gums up again.

When I sew the jingles on and the dress gets heavier and heavier with each row. Making it harder to get the rows on right. That part usually takes me the longest. I have sewn and re-sewn rows. Annoying!

Good one, Ojibwaywmn. I can relate to that one.

Sometime I will make dresses in two parts, the top and then the bottom. And to get the bottom part sewn on evenly to the top can be challenging especially for adult dresses.

I think sewing on the rows are challenging..esp if u want them to match the other side..lol..or close to it..and the sides esp when they don't match up...sometimes I'll be thinkin about something else when I am measuring and forget to add those extra inches for sewing and it comes out smaller..but yeh those two..for the one who sews on jingles with the rows I don't do that anymore..I sew the bias tape tabs whatever u wanna call them on to the bias that goes on the dress and then sew that onto the dress..add the jingles later..it takes too much time to put jingles on and then trying to sew it on the dress..

sometimes I forget about the belt and it seems long enough..but to add the belt its like oh no its too short..lol..but now I know to add extra length at the bottom until I am sure that its not to short or add some design at the bottom so the added length doesn't show..hahaha..but yup its does get frustrating when the sewing doesnt go right for anything...

If anyone has any remedies to our little obstacles, please post them, because I'd sure give them a try.

I use Sewer's Aid:

I apply it to the needle and thread and keep doing that off and on as I'm sewing and it sure helps a lot!

Do you use paper underneath the fabric too? Sometimes that helps but not sure if it works with a lot of layers.

I don't make jingle dresses, but I do a lot of sewing, beading. When I get frustrated, I usually talk to another person and see if they can offer any tips, sometimes the easiest solutions are the hardest to find or see. Or I do other things like play my favoritest powwow music and dance my heart out for a song or two, that usually helps. As always its more fun to sew with another person.
Good luck Ojibwe Sweety!!! Long time no see

Somebody here did a thread on the needle. I think they cleaned it with rubbing alcohol but I don't remember....

~Miengun Mum~ is an unknown quantity at this point
I have a old NDN trick, I sew the smaller 2 or 3 designs together first then place them on the larger designs. Then you are not sewing through all 5 or 6 layers of designs. Hope that will work for you !

what is so time consuming is: drawing the design on the wonder under or other iron on then cutting that out and ironing that to the fabric cutting that out and then sewing all the designs to the fabric..I wished there were some quick short cuts??lol..
