Question Teaching new jinglers

I recently had the honor of being asked to teach a couple of new jinglers how to do this dance and wear the regalia. One is my cousin, she's about 13 (Oneida) and hasn't been to many powwows. The other is the daughter of one of my colleagues (Bad River Ojibwe) and she's switching from fancy to old-style jingle.

I'm not quite sure how to start them off. I was thinking of getting them used to the tonal styles of jingle dress songs. It's more of a big deal with the younger one I guess. She doesn't recognize how to stay "on beat" yet, and she has not yet had to take care of a jingle dress. Any suggestions on where I should start?

Start with the origin of the dress... too many people don't know the significance behind the dress.

Well I was going to do that anyway, one of them is Ojibwe and Mide, so it shouldn't be too difficult. But I was more looking for how to teach them the dances and the songs. With the younger one, should I make sure that she can dance with traditional steps first?

i would have her learn the steps from the beginning... no chance of her getting confused then. Does that make sense??

I have been asked to teach young girls how to dance jingle before. It was a bit hard as all I can really show them is the basic steps. They all have to develop their own style of dance. Especially if they wish to dance contemporary.

Maybe if you had some footage of different dancers they can watch and learn, in addition to what you teach them.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe I could put youtube to work lol. I was going to get together with each of them and dance for a few days, but I was looking for something else to do besides, "here's the story of the dress and here's how you dance in it".

How did we learn - Mainly by watching and 'feeling the vibe' so to speak. Not saying other tribes are not this way - but to Ojibway Ikwes, much of jingle dress dancing comes very naturally. We all started with the basics then as time goes on, the steps to the beats come along as well, developing our own style as to what to do with the fans or our hands to the honor beats, learn when to stop - learning how to dance to sidestep, etc etc. Let this new dancer know this.......and when she is at a powwow, she could give semma and a gift to an elder J/D dancer and talk more about it. If she is Mide she can do the same there at the ceremonies...talk to them dancers who dance in the lodge. Lots of valuable learning there.
