Eye makeup

I noticed a lot of jingle dancers wearing makeup in the corner of their eyes like starbursts and stuff. Is there significance to this? Is it tribal specific or just personal preference? I'm doing my jingle dress coming out on Labor Day weekend and am trying my best to get everything figured out. Wado!

To add to your question and this is in my opinion from what I know. Nowadays, especially in competition pow-wows other than any styles that are traditional...facepaint don't really mean anything but your own style and preference of what may be your thing.

I know for some tribes face painting are used for many motives. Quite often back in the olden days it was used for social status, identity (societies, clan, tribes), game, religious reasons and war or to scare off rivals. Some tribes still recognized face paints in that point of view I would do some cultural research of your people and ask around at pow-wows what does their colors and designs mean. For example, there are colors and designs even today that are still sacred mainly used by traditional dancers especially if one is a veteran or have been in combat. Some of the ways are still highly respected and observed in honoring our warriors. So be careful in choosing certain colors and designs....one might think you been in battle....lol!

I'm still learning myself its been years that my family and I have been in the circle and being a combat veteran I am still learning from my elders...Just remember respecting one's way is very imortant even if its just dancing for fun there are still formalities and scaredness that are still practiced in the circle today.

For the most part face painting can be use for artistic expression when dancing it adds flare and sets yourself apart from your competitors. Good Luck and have fun at it!

that was a really great reply! personally, i wear white paint off the corners of my eyes when jingle dress dancing. it is a means of self-expression but i try to stay with the mainstay designs...though i have seen some girls get pretty creative...

when i dress traditionally, i wear paint according to what our women use to wear for ceremonies or celebrations, depending on the occasion.

Yeah, I do not believe there is any significance to the paint, it's just uniqueness - individualism - being the dancer you want to be out there.

I was wondering about that too
Thanks for sharing....I didn't want to use any on my daughter because I didn't know the reason for it. It adds to the image and I like it but for being new to dancing Jingle...we still walk on eggshells for things we are unaware of.

Thanks for all your great responses. I've seen a lot of ladies wearing like a star design very small in the corner of each eye and I think it is very pretty. Ok, next question on this subject. Do you use face paint to do this or like a white eyeliner pencil?

U can also use face painting kits that last longer. Grease paint is great, but if you got oily skin....it will rub off. The face paint sets works great too...if you like details the paint brush works great...

Is the eye makeup that you saw a new thing to do for jingle dancers? I saw a jingle dancer but her face makeup was lined around her eyes normally. I would love to hear if it's something being done everywhere.

JinglinBooty is an unknown quantity at this point
I have seen people get really fancy with their eye make up out here. I even tried it for a while and got fancier buying those rhinestone belly button tattoos and cutting them up. Then I realized how old I was, how rediculous I looked, and gave it up.

The eye makeup is suppose to get lighter as we get older. I am 42 and so I try to keep it light for the eyes and face. How old are you?

Umm, a lot of our women paint their foreheads red in traditional dress...it doesn't get lighter for everyone, there are no general rules.

FYI: in some tribes, it's proper for the dancer to get "rights" to wear certain designs by their eyes.
