Your take...
What are your ladies take on making you jingle dresses? I've heard that some people just make it all at once but then some people say that you have to add a jingle on for each day of the year. What's your take?

Thanks for that comments, and I didn't take them in a bad way, I was just wondering cuz a few people have told me that... I have heard that the 365 cones deal was fairly new too but still it made me wonder you know? Different regions, different stories.

I keep saying I don't know where this put-1-cone-on-a-day came from. My goodness I got 3 on the go for myself and it would take me three years. LOL! Can't afford that at my age
![]() ChiMiigwetch Shinaab for your comments. Very goot!!

LoL! Yeah I agree that would take way too long. My mom wants me to switch from fancy to jingle (I do too...I'm not too well suited for fancy shawl) and she thinks that we should do the whole 365 cones/one per day thing. I've only just recently started dancing again so we're gonna take our time making it (and get my endurance up! lol) but I can't seem to tell her that you don't need to take a year (unless you know it takes awhile to get everything together what not). I know a jingler I'm gonna talk to about this but does anyone have any suggestions on how to convince her?

Well........ someone convinced her and she's stickin' with it. I admire her for that. But.... if she spoke with some old time Ojib jinglers, they may be able to sway her view. I suggest you take her to a powwow ( are you in Six Nations? ) and introduce her to some older ladies. There's a few that go to - the bush - powwow. Try that.

yeah i never caught on with that new-agey 365 cones thing. i do take the time to make sure the women that make my regalia make them with a good heart. my auntie says she wont handle my dresses unless she's in a good mood and usually prays while putting on the last cone. im having two new dresses made for the summer and before i dance in them, im taking them up to a midewiin ceremony in bad river to be blessed and feasted. hopefully, that should kick off my powwow season in a good way!

Yeah I live on Six Nations and my mom is Ojibwe (well half anyway she is registered under the New Credit band) she just never learned all the traditions. I think I will take your advice Kihenzii thanks. We're heading out to a powwow tomorrow and my jingler friend will be there too so maybe she could explain too.

One a Day?
The question is if you're putting on one a day. What do you do on the days when you are on your moon time when you are not to touch the dress at all?
I remember if you had the dream you made your dress, got it blessed, etc ....... now, there's 365, 7 rows, one a day, protocol, adding more rules and some even criticize colours and the presentation of the dance and self. So, what happened to the original true meaning of dancing the dance for the healing and wellness of self and others? I think that people add too many rules on a certain traditional things/values and make it difficult and limit other's possibilities to achieve their goals to fulfill their dream. I would just make my dress and do the things for preparation before I wear the dress. Last edited by Majii; 07-01-2008 at 03:04 PM. |
