Serger or Embroidery

Out of the good gracious heart, my husband decided to by me a surger when I wasn't there!!! anyways he thought that a serger does the work around certain designs. I'm wonder does or can a serger do the finished work around complicated designs to bring it out more or is it from an embroidery machine. Any help would be nice before I take it back to get an embroifery machine or take it out of the box.
Thanks

from my understanding, a serger is a machine that does the secure stitichng on the inside of your clothes. if you look inside your sleeve, that zigzaggy pattern is from a serger.

yeah thats what I thought it was for too, because it cuts as u go along. My stepmom uses hers for fine fabrics that fray alot.

The serger is NOT used for applique work, any sewing or embordery machine that will give you a nice satin stitch will do fine. Hey, you could mail me your new serger? Send to: Grateful Ntvmama in Alaska PO Box 2 99709

HA HA very funny. Maybe I'll send you a picture of a serger and that will be close enough. LOL But thanks though for the info. I thought it was embroidery but I wasn't sure.
Thanks

With just a simple sewing machine, just use the satin stitch to go around the designs. Guess it takes years of practice tho.

What a sweet thing for your hubby to do! He deserves something special!

The serger uses three or four threads to interlock your seams when you do construction sewing. With a regular machine this is a two-step process. The serger does it in one step and gives a nice professional look to your seams. But that is really all a serger does. I had a serger for a while but did not use it much and ended up selling it.

If you want to do the fancy thread embroidery like monogram initials, flowers and bunnies on your clothing, towels, etc, then you might like an embroidery machine. Some use design cards that you plug in. Others are computerized. Don't know about how to create your own designs. These machines cost more than your average regular sewing machine. There is a wide variety of embroidery machines out there so do some research first on which one will work best for you.

For most ribbonwork and applique, you can do just fine with a regular sewing machine that has an adjustable satin stitch. I do all my mine on a Sears Kenmore which is 15 years old and has about 12 stitches of which I only use perhaps 3 or 4 on a regular basis.
