I think the dresses I've seen on older jinglers are more traditional and conservative looking.

Is it appropriate for older Jingle dancers to still wear a plume or feather upright on the back of the head? I have seen a few older Jingle dancers with their hair only braided without the typical upright plume or feather worn by younger dancers.
I would very much appreciate your comments. Respectfully, |

Most often, no plumes, no hand fans. Sometimes a nice scarf or hankee only in the hand. No hopping, no skipping, no dancing backwards, etc. I love watching most older, traditional jinglers dance.

Thank you for your comments.
I am still a long distance runner in my lates fifties and can't help it when the endorphins kick in while dancing jingles. I've dancing jingles for more than 20 years. I do not compete . Would I be criticized if once in a while inadvertely I do a few sutil "younger steps"? It does feel that I am not doing anything wrong. Also, I still wear the plume or an upright feather... Is that inappropriate? Help! I'll be dancing this weekend. Thanks again |

You've danced for 20 years? And... you are asking questions like this?
I don't get it. Well.... maybe I get it, but I just won't say it. |

What bothers you the most? My questions or the fact that I am having a hard time making the transition because I am athletic?
Your bitterness, ignorance, and disrespect makes me think you don't know much about Indian principles. Do you? You have just spoiled the purpose of this web site. |

Please, take it easy on me. I just don't understand why a seasoned jingle dress dancer would be asking a question that one with 20 years experience would probably be passing on to the next generation of dancers. Could you elaborate? Help me out. |

I don't know you or your history or personal style. Traditonal style jingle does not include the fancy steps that "fancy shawl" is known for. You can tell the fancy dancers that transition over to jingle very easily. I do not care for these newer moves. If you are that athletic, etc. why not do fancy shawl dancing? It seems to me also, that if you have danced jingle for 20 years, you would have some expertise on this subject by now too. Good luck with your dancing anyhow, and you should be proud of being in good shape at your age.

athletic? what does that have to do with anything. your too funny. the original style is not fancy shawl and that is the difference. i dont think youve been dancing jingle for 20 years. ndns learn by observation and obviously you haven't been doing much of that. maybe you just want support to criticize some older dancer you don't like???? |

"...maybe you just want support to criticize some older dancer you don't like????" Ouch, I hope not! I'm a 59 year old gramma, non-status / Metis by the gummint standards, coming out jingle dancing this year. Just have 200 more jingles and I'm ready! LOL... Danced tradish, not in regalia just in intertribals, and still do but now I guess I won't soon... I probably need the healing, we'll see what comes from there. I wanted to say miigwetch for all the words here, I've seen some 40ish wimmins dancin' jingle - not the high steppers! - some years back. I'll be dancing tradish jingle. I want to say, I don't look too ndn, was raised it by my metis mom (she didn't know that word, just called us ndns), and I don't wear a sash or step dance! I received some harsh words from an old elder (man) some years ago and it kept me from making regalia, he called me a wannabe. I didn't respond, he's my elder. It hurt. But I've been hurt much more since then, I'm nervous and afraid, but received a dream in April / May and have been making my regalia ever since. Just wanted to say miigwetch for your words, they have encouraged me!

First off, I want to say that I don't think age matters. Another thing is I think you have a snobby attitude and if you have been dancing for 20 years as a jingle dancer you wouldn't have to ask these questions. Your attitude has just been a shame towards these women trying to help you and towards the dress.
Second off, my aunt is in her 60s and still dances jingle. She is a very good jingle dancer around here where we live. |
