What I do is cut the sleeve twice as big and gather it around the armhole while sewing it.

That's part of it, but taper the sleeve down some to the 'cuff' [wrist]--particularly if it is a long-sleeved dress. You don't want alot of material or gathers there. You might need darts at the elbow, too.

go look for a sewing pattern at walmart or a fabric store .. with the style of sleeves that you wish to have. the directions will be inside tha pattern on exactly how to do it (on how to gather it, the correct width and length of the actual sleeve) and it will look good. i've seen where ppl have "made" their own patterns on their own on how they "think" it should be made.

and in my opinion and many others .. it doesnt look "right". i've seen girls with sleeves that hang down past their knees!!! when they arent pulled up to the wrist area, trying to get that "puffy" look. or they look odd around tha shoulder area .. cut too big and dont sit right ..

go with a tried and true pattern and look good ...

I absolutly use darts.
BUT I agree with Chazzif. If I am sewing something that I know is very different then what I have done before, I will refer to a pattern. & you only need find a pattern with the sleeve sut you are looking for. & then incorporate it into your pattern.

But when it comes to puffy sleeves, look for a true puffy sleeve. The real old style that you would see on a princess pattern for halowe'en, is an older style that was held with arm-band kinda pieces, & sewn differently. Also refer to the section on the pattern that refers to matierials. If the material you want to use is not on the suggested list. Check with an employee from the fabric store...or here.

I love the puffy sleeves.
