Contemporary vs Traditional

Hello,
Can anyone give me a good definition or differences between comtemporary and traditional Jingle dress competition categories? Thanks

White Dove Creations/ Jingle Dresses

The traditional dress has seven rolls with 365 jingles, one for each day of the year. They were a solid color without any appliques. The dance has small steps and would never dance backwards or in circles. This a healing dance.

The comtemporary dress is designed to compete with the fancy shawls. The dresses are very colorful with lots of appliques. The number of rows and jingles is up to dancer. The steps are much more flashy. They dance backwards and in circles.

I believe that the 365 cones thing is a myth. There have been a bunch of threads about this topic

Most of the jingle dancers that I know (well) have 365 jingles to start & add one each year, One started with more, she said that being a bigger woman, 365 just wann't going to cut it, and one other that I Know bassed it on the number of days on a 13 moon calander, which is just off of the commonly used 365 day clander.

Its a myth. Believe me.

Last year, we thought we'd invite the Anishnabe Grammas, Ogitchida Kwes that still dance Jingle Dress. We found there was a need to have things clarified, and what better way than to have them come together and have meetings, (like workshops). They shared valuable information to the young Anishnabek Ikwe who want to dance jingle. The 365 story about putting one cone on each day is not the way. They did not know where that came from, but it is not from the Anishnabe. I wished all of you could have attended our meetings, our sharing circles about the jingle dress. Was awesome. :)

Old Style --- Gramma Style jingle is my style ;)

Are there going to be anymore workshops? If so, then let me know so I can attend. You should make a post about when and where the workshops are going to be held and write down directions etc.. on here if you haven't done so already.

I think alot of us jingle dancers need to go to workshops to remind ourselves about the jingle dress. That's why well one reason why I ain't dancing right now. I defintly feel I need to be reminded because sometimes I lose myself along the way. Other reason is my ma is dying so things are difficult. Lost one parent now I'm losing another so it's only right that I try to deal with this and find my way back later.

some of my elders who have been jingle dancers for 3 decades, have said that the 365 jingles is a myth as well. They told me this long before I heard that this is a traditional jingle dress.

What I was told about the traditional dresses, that they are not flashy, they are usually in black, with silver cones. Very simple dresses compared to what you see today.
