short hair help

I was recently diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin's lymphoma) and will be starting my treatments soon. The chemo will make my hair fall out. After treatment is over and my hair starts growing back, its gonna be short for quite a while. My hair take FOREVER to grow.

My question is, once I have recovered enough to be able to dance again, what can I do to decorate my head since I won't have braids or enough hair to hold barrettes or plumes?
Any ideas? A beaded headband comes to mind but what else? Help me out with some suggestions, please....

I think the headband would be nice and you could use double sided tape to hold it on and make it what ever size you like, and if your wnating to wear feathers make a beaded piece ,put swivel hooks on it and a place to hook em to on your beadwork and wolla you got plumes, drop feathers of your choice, you can do that on head bands, rosettes ,the double sided tape should work , ive know people to do that when they had lost their hair and said it was on there pretty good and wore feathers. and sweetie all my prayers go out to you! it will be ruff but you can do it!!!

Hey girl,

My thoughts are with you. Chemo affects people differently, my dad kept his hair so ya never know....

I'm still thinking about what to do.... I'll post more later on. I'll be praying for ya.

I greatly appreciate all the good thoughts and well wishes!
The good thing is, the type of cancer I have is very treatable and often curable. My disease was caught in an early stage so my prognosis is excellent.
Well, while I am in treatment and recovering, I will have no excuses not to finish my beadwork projects. Then I can look forward to wearing some new stuff when I can dance again.

Sorry to here about your health problems. Where I grew up, in the Northwest we use hats. Both fez and basket styles. Mine is wool with beadwork on it. You could also use a nice old style scarf to match your outfits. Use what makes you comfortable, and I hope once you feel well enough to dance again, it will help to heal you inside and out. I will pray for you this evening. WW

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.
Virtual tobacco to all of you! :-D Well, my first chemo treatment starts tomorrow. This week will be my last chance to buy a wig. It'll easier to do it while I still have my natural hair so that it can match. I also want to get my hair cut short so that when it does start thinning out, it will be easier to manage.

That's kinda tempting actually, cuz those hats look really neat. Maybe some Northwest person could temporarily adopt me for 6 months so I could wear one. Just kidding!

If I do dance, I may have to lay off Jingle for a while and dance Traditional. I do believe in the healing power of the drum and I'd like as much as possible! I've got a black velvet floral beaded outfit I have had in a half-finished state for a few years now. I could complete that and make a matching velvet turban/hat to go with it. I could wear the wig but people have told me that wigs are hot and scratchy. So I'll have to do some experimenting with a scarf and/or the hat idea.

If you decide to wear a wig, make sure that you wear a wig cap to protect your scalp from the friction. Most of the one's I've seen are made of nylon. This way you're protecting the follicles of the new hair growing in.

Wigs can be hella hot but since it's getting into the fall and winter they'll be added warmth. They're also a great way to experiment with color (a little pick-me-up on those down days.)

My thoughts are with you.

I knew a girl years ago that had lost her hair becuase of leukemia treatments. She still danced jingle and she wore a scarf tied around her head like a bandana.

Whatever you do, traditional or not, do it respectfully and tastefully. People will understand and not say anything bad about it. But if you don't do it in a respectful manner, you will get told.

Our prayers are with you.
