Jingle Dress Imposter
OK, I'm a Shawl Dancer. But in May I'm going to be Head dancer at powwow, and I want to Jingle for a session. So are there any tips out there on how to look like a pro? any advice would be most appreciated

Just make sure you know how to jingle. straight and side step.
that is the problem with some of the jingler we both know, they wear the clothes but cant do the dance. Sometimes they cant even tell the difference in the beat or the song...Ive seen that many times 'round here. Jinglers dancing straight very fast to keep up with the side step beat that they either dont know how to do or dont know its a side step song. Are you HD in MA or PA? |

Sorry I'm a bit late. I've been swamped with dang near everything.....
Please don't take this the wrong way as I mean no disrespect but if you don't know the steps maybe it's better for you to dance fancy. Jingle isn't really a dance to pull out because ya wanna show off. Being a head dancer is a big responsibility (I'm sure you know that... not trying to be condescending), people will be looking to you for answers and will think you know what you're doing. You don't wanna get out there and make some big faux pas. Alot of people see something (behold the power of observation lol) and take it for gospel. You don't wanna be responsible for people messin up lol. I honestly would stick to fancy.

I"m head dancer at DeUnDaGa, and I expect Bum Kneez to be there! (Just messing)
In response to everyone else .....WOW I guess everyone else thought that I would just throw on a Jingle Dress and go be head dancer and not know anything. I guess that suits some people but not myself. I'm studying tapes and practicing and have months to go before powwow. Im working with people who know more than I do because I don't like making an idiot out of myself. But I guess if we followed your mantra of "Don't do anything you don't know how to do" then we'd of never learned to dance in the first place.

The problem I think most people - well I'll speak for myself - is that it seems that you're starting jingle dress for the sole purpose of dancing at this pow wow. If you're starting to jingle dress dance and it just coincides with this, then keep working at it, but if you're doing it just to have another outfit to wear, I'd just forget about it.
You sort of changed your tune a little too from your first post so it's hard to follow your thought process. You seem very young so that's all I'll say...good luck!

I guess I was a little upset when responding last time, for it seems with almost every post I get attacked on this site. But Alas, I should give you some more information.
One of my best friends died in November 04 and he was the kind of person where If I said I liked something he would reply that I should make it, just in case I ever wanted to use it or what not. Upon multiple Occassions he said "Hey, you should make a Jingle Dress just in case you ever want to Jingle". Now the story jumps to May 05. I was asked to be Head Dancer at DeUnDaGa powwow in PA. Afterwards I knew I wanted to Jingle for a Session. (Now previously I've tried Jingle and it didn't feel right) Now it feels right. I'm not going to half-*** it. Because I'm not doing it to be wearing a different dress for a Session. I'm doing it because I want to be a Jingle Dress Dancer along with being a Fancy Dancer. I want there distinct style to each, because I, too many times, watched fancy/jingle dress dancers and it seems when they change into whatever dress, their style hasn't changed. I realize it's not another outfit to wear. It would be all to easy if it were. Another friend graciously gave me a beautiful jingle dress. I don't want to look like a Fancy Dancer trapt in a Jingle Dress. It would be a disgrace to the Dress At powwow in May I'm not just going to Jingle for a Session, its the powwow when I start being a Jingle Dress Dancer. I hope this helps elaborate on what I wanted to accomplish. Hoopster

If you had posted this in the first place, your responses would have been different.
Good luck with this endeavor.

I'm pretty sure I said please don't take this in the wrong way as I mean no disrespect. That means, "I'm not trying to step on your toes,,,, but because you asked, this is what I think". Your previous post ("But I guess if we followed your mantra of "Don't do anything you don't know how to do" then we'd of never learned to dance in the first place.") was quite pissy. You asked..... and based on the information you gave, I stated my four cents. I did it with respect. Not everyone else will behave the same. With that out of the way....
I wish you all the best.
