Old Style

Ok when I was Growing up I was always a Jingle dress dancer and there was NO such thing as old style and now is like these woman that are not from my tribe that dances with there 3 row jingle dress and say they are OLD STYLE CHAMPS and what not, some of my Elders Like the way they Dance but they seems to over do it at Hinckley Contest.... but old style my MOMS puts it is just walking with a little jump to make the jingles move but I am so Confused because I look at the Contest Way of Jingle dress, than I see these woman that Dance the way they do, but they also bring these dresses out at the Big Drum Ceremonial Dances(powwow). I think it just to WEIRD.
But I love the way the Contest Jingle Dress Dancers all Dance they are so LOVELY.... not to be bad mouthing any body but what do you all think!

im not sure how to respond to this because idont want to down anyones way of dancing...maybe they were shawl dancers before becoming jingle...that could be a possibility..or one is copying another persons moves because they get more of a reaction from the crowd so they decided to dance that way which copying another persons moves thats one thang that perturbs me because my moves i feel that there personal to me...or maybe its the way they were taught how to dance...i guess that just my opinion...ithink maybe it depends on their purpose of dancing and where their heart is...like when i dance i dance my heart and soul out...i dont think when i dance and if theres ppl that dont like the way i dance because it isnt bold like comtemporary that i just ignore those ppl

oikwe01,

The sad truth is when contest dancing for money, whatever someone does to win (no matter how outrageous) . . . others will copy in order to also win.

Unhappy jaiz..

well...JIngle is jingle..but i personally think ppl take advantage of this for the attention it gets and what not..like..tradish jinglers can go all shiny and dance wicked n fast n what not..but they should still have the right amount of jingles and still go through what ur suppose to do to soo..personally i think theres gonna be like hardly any trad jinglers soon except some objibs..its nutz..lol when i think about it though..there should be a type of dance where u do fancy shawl stuff but dont need a fancy shawl..juss like a dress.maybe theere is already i duno but that would be kinda cool ..anywayz thats muh post lol..onen!!

I love to watch jingle, and prefer the "old style" a graceful dancer with flat feet, and a little movement to make all the jingles sound pretty. You really can tell when ladies have come from fancy to jingle, etc. I don't like what competition has done to this style of dance.

Whether you are contemp or oldstyle I think its a very big challenge to keep your jingles in time to the beat of the drum..when you listen you can hear when someone is off...

its simple...old style and original style are what they say they are. When the dress first came out there was only the one usual way the ladies would dance; there were no kicking, twirling, spinning, tilting the head, wearing 500 plumes, and what not. Original style aka old style is how it was before the fancy revolution. It dont take a genius to tell the differences.

Native 1 ~~~ your right about the jingle being on time with the drum all to often you can tell which dancer are off beat. Unfortunetly sometimes those off beat ones are the winners. To me thats a not a big deal.
As for the the dancers and the ceremonial dances I being from Mille Lacs seen on one dancing and If the old men( Raining, Ole and others) thought there were dancing wrong then someone would have said something. She places quite a bit so there is no reason for them not to call her a champion dancer.
It seems sometime everyone version of this old styel are different. For me I watched and grew up watching Evelyn Tom, Maggie White and Panji Gahbow dancing. Thats what original style is. I seen the jingle dress go from what it started out as to what you see now. I accept it and I watch it. Its up to the parents to teach what and how their children dance and respect the original teachings. I dont think its up to me to say who is right or wrong but I just do what I was taught and expect the same from my daughter. Just my 2 cents

maybe jingle dancers sometimes concerned about competition rather than the true meaning of why they came about dancing jingle..i guess it has t odo with how much powwows have evolved into who gets first place and who doesnt...its sad...i just hear alot of jingle dancers talk about who gets first place and who doesnt tht i honestly get tired of hearing about competing...im sure that in the beginning many were taught the values of dancing jingle and dueties but i think somewhere along the line they got caught up in the competition that theyve forgotten why they became a jingle dancer in the first place...well im rambling here..i guess the only thing that we can hope for is to make sure that we passed on our teachings to our daughters and just hope that theyll do the same to make sure that meaning of the jingle dress isnt forgotten about..maybe im rambling cus its the codine in the medicine...weather has totally changed so im just all blahhh today..ya guys have a good one im gonna snooze before class...
