I have a eagle feather fan for my jingle dress. I was told I could also use a macaw feather fan but not a turkey feather fan. So I have a question. It seems to me like it would be more traditional to use turkey feathers than macaw feathers. So why can you use macaw feathers and not turkey feathers?

I use pheasent feathers because i dont have enough eagle to make a fan... I never had any problems.

are you talking about regular turkey or barred turkey? i know very little botu the cherokee so i dont know whether ya use flat or wing so i dont know if yar talking about turkey feathers for flat or wing fans..i know that some tribes use barred in ceremonies only and that could be the reason..traditionally jingle dancers didnt carry fans but if your more competitive then thats kewl...i can say that macaw are alot prettier...ive worked with macaw feathers before and i just like variety in color..when i was working on my mas fan when she was dancing womens tradish...ill post more later i have to go to class..

I use both turkey and eagle feather fans with my cloth dresses, but I am trying my best to be as close to the traditional jingle dress regalia as possible. I dunno bout barred or reg, I wuz just told NO TURKEY FEATHERS! So yeah. I dunno much bout Anishabe customs but I wanted a reason for this to satisfy my curiosity. Thanx yall.

I use eagle feathers but I have seen people use both, and if you want to go traditionally you do not use a fan. I would suggest speaking with someone from that tribe or someone affiliated with the proper old style information.

The only one person that I have seen use a macaw fan is Crystal Whiteshield. (Sorry for butchard name).I don't travel to much but this year was the first time I saw that at Sky City.
