One thing I would do first off is have myself measured. I would then compare those measurements to the ones given on the back of the pattern for the size I am. Then based on that I would make adjustments. I was taught in home ec to make a cheap cotton trial of what I was making. It may be a little more work but it sure saves time in the long run and lots of money and heartaches if the way the pattern is made doesn't suit your body type.
Hope that helps some.

I totally agree with MATO. That is usually what I do too. I wear a size 8-10 regularly but when I make my dress its usually a 12.

I would have to warn you about flaring the bottom too much on your dress. I have seen a few dresses that have flared out too much and the jingles sway on an awkward motion while you are dancing. I would think that this could throw off a dancer if your dress is swaying more than it should.

I usually just eyeball it with the skirt portion of the dress. I make my dresses from a jacket pattern and then connect the skirt part later on. For the skirt part, I usually use cotton and wrap it around, making sure I have enough room to kick and extend my legs. I didn't do this with one dress and now I have to walk around like a geisha taking tiny steps because the bottom of the dress doesn't have enough flare to accomodate my stride. However, this dress has really forced me to make my steps tinier and daintier, so guess it can't be such a bad thing *haha*

Good luck with your dress!

R.

I am kind of puzzled myself. This year I was given the privelage to jingle and this will be my 1st time ever having to make the dress. I am use to traditional dancing, but quit about 6 years ago for personal issues. I was given the privelage this year along with a lot of jingles, passed from a elder, just enough for the dress, 365, I know the colors, and even the pattern, but I don't know where to begin. I want a good pattern for the cut of the dress for these dainty movements that Sweet Syilx talks about cause that's my type of steps. I also need to find the ribbon for the jingles, in lime green, but that is a hard color to find. So I need help here too. Thanks all!!

jingle dress makin

my first and best advice ask anybody you know!!!for advice/questions...even some of ppl at the fabric stores (seamstresses) ask some pw ppl ya know. and make the mock outfit first (like a pre-test outfit). and mistakes are good...you learn from em...but all in all just get yaself a good pattern if ya dont have any1 to help..hope that helps!

other ppl go by eye and i can tottally do that now but my first time i needed a dress pattern. and just gota make sure its pear shape at the bottom (but not too much flow like the earlier post stated) but just enough.
the steps i followed:
1-cut pattern/ material
2-applique
3-sewed pieces together (but leave one side seam until last step)
front dress piece, back dress piece, sleeves
4- jingles
5-and sew side seam (step 3) and taadaa! there u go!! LOL

HOPE THATS NE HELP!!!

check out fabric stores for dress patterns (the on-sale ones are goodies) and also i been told second hand stores...and ya ribbons good luck sista! i have the same problem lol

Lightbulb

I use old sheets from the thrift store to make a sample dress then I sew with large basteing stiches just to be sure it will fit because who wants to waste satin ect.

Hello everyone -

Well, I dont know if this will help or not but if you live in Canada, then you can pick up this pattern pretty easily. It's available at Wal-Mart, It's a New Look pattern #6270. It's a jacket pattern, but its semi-fitted, so it's actually pretty decent. My and two other of my fellow jinglers use this pattern for our dresses and it's a tried and true pattern (at least in my humble opinion).

As well, I dont know if you are looking for ribbon or bias tape. If it's for your jingles, I would suggest that you use extra wide single fold bias tape to string up the jingles and extra wide double fold bias tape to secure them to the dress. You can surprisingly easily find lime green bias tape at either Wal-Mart or Fabricland. Of course, again, this is assuming that you live in Canada.

Anyways, if you absolutely cannot find this wherever you may be located, msg me and I can help ya out. Mail it to you? Anyways, hope that helps.

Thanks Sweet Syilx!! That Bias idea is great, and being that I wanted the flare sleeves that would be a great pattern, that is the one that has the flare sleeves right? I looked in Walmart here in South Carolina, but they didnt have much of a selection of colors. I am going to check out other store on my way to DC this weekend, especially at all the outlets I'll be passing, I should have luck if not, I will be Messaging ya! Thanks!!

Cool trick

Another cool trick I learned when I was starting out it by taking a t-shirt that is 1 size or 1/2 bigger and trace the shirt. Leaving out the cuffs. This helped me out when I did not have a pattern and I always got a nice fitting dress. You can also control if you want you dress bell shapped and if you want a zipper to take off your dress.

Hey, just an FYI, I have found the lime green color ribbon at Joanne fabrics...they call it Kiwi or something like that...used it for an outfit and it was awesome...it only comes in the 3/8" size, but it works.

I have a question. How do you do those cuffs on the short sleeved dresses. Like the cuffs are wide with a keen design and where the body of the sleeve gets fiitted into the cuff, what do you suggest or am I making no sense? LOL
After all it is late, and I have to work tomorrow

One tip for getting the color you want for bias tape is to buy it in white and then dye it your desired shade. A little more work but the color possibilities are endless. Just be sure you buy enough tape so you don't run out. You may not be able to replicate your original dye batch.

If you can't find the jacket pattern mentioned above, you can also use a pattern for a loose-fitting dress or tunic in a simple style without a lot of seams. I make my dress 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than what I wear in everyday clothes. None of my dresses have any flare to the skirts. They basically go straight down from the waist. I take the hip measurement, add 4-6 inches and make that the width of the skirt. However, if you have very narrow hips, you might need a slight flare to have enough leg room.

does ne one think it's to flashy to make clips for my hair with mirrors??? plz let me know cuz i don't want to blind other dancers.
