well we dont usually get that many jingle dancers down here except when its a really big competition. From what I've seen, the ones who do the sidestep with their feet flat on the ground come out on top.

We get the dancers that dance on their tippy toes up here too.
Mostly the young girls do it, especially if they were fancy shawl berfore they became jingle. And here too, they come out on top. And the women who keep it real don't even get a chance. I've seen many good dancers who dance the right way and judges prefer the ones who are showy. I dance in a way that feels right. Not to keep up with what's popular. That way, I don't get disappointed and I have a good time and I don't have to worry about "who's the best" |

guess I do things backwards but I used to sidestep with my feet flat on the floor but after seeing who wins most I switched to going up on my tip toes. First time, the day after I could hardly walk my calves were so sore but then after awhile I was used to it. It's harder but I think it does look better if you do it right. Same thing with straight jingle dance, it's changed as well. Seems like more fancy shawl moves without the shawl now. Long time ago this dance wasn't done that way. Everything changes or evolves it seems, even our dances.

I think Bejay(thats how Ive seen it spelled on some winners list for some pw but I dunno fo sho)McDaniels does an awesome up on her toes side step but I like Jennifer Hamiltons...shes flat on her feet...never looks tired or like shes showing off. I think a side step shouldnt be all that fancy seeing how it is the dance that it is....I like to keep my feet flat and take small barely noticeble steps to the side with one foot while kinda scootin and draggin along the other....I never get sore or tired...I dont ever show off while side stepping....during a straight song I get pretty fancy...Im a contemp dancer... Anywayz I really like Jennifers way of dancin...she looks good and likes shes havin fun with out tryin.

My daughter's a jingle dress dancer that is still trying to improve her side step and who, on occasion, competes, so this was an interesting discussion for us (I was reading it to her).
She had me vote "still practicing" on the poll, and uses the flat-footed method. She kind of raised an eyebrow at the comparison of the two in terms of winning competitions, though. So did I. Jingle is such a special dance, it seems kind of odd to us that one would forego the tradition of the dance to win a prize. If flat-footed is traditional, shouldn't the judges be giving extra points to those that dance accordingly?

Well for me, I don't go wayyy up on my tip toes and I can't dance flat, so i'm like in between and some times, I swing my arms, but not that often. Which ever works best for me is what I stick to! :dancer:

alternate side step style
I haven't read anybody mentioning the one side step where each leg has a step independent of the other. My sister dances the side step by back swinging the right leg with the beat while her left foot shuffles side to side. All the while keeping balance and being able to glide with the beat of the drum. There must surely be other jingle dress dancers who dance this style.

Hi I just joined this site, Although I've been dancing fancy shawl for over 15 years the gravity that's getting me says switch to jingle, plus I've always loved the style. I've studied dancers and seen many things... can anyone sugest anything or can tell me anything that they would like to share to add to my sucess. I've danced a little but am nervous about getting in the ring yet.
Thanks all and good luck this season! From the east coast... ~Beth
