your best bet is to buy a pattern. I picked up a bunch of cheap ones at a second hand store... cuz I had a hard time with the sleeves as well. At the same time, I was lucky enough to find a good pattern for a skirt that I can use for fancy shawl dresses ~ bonus!

Ima have to ask my mom she does it w/o a pattern. But than again shes been doing that stuff for a very long time now. It looks kinda easy though, I know when she does it, she makes it really tight at first and it looks retarded than when shes done it always comes right. Goot luck. But I'll get back to you on that!

Patterns are what I use for my daughters dress and usually get them while they are on sale at Hancocks check out there website and click on National sales flyer and it will give you the whole month of sales and what to look forward to. July is a good month for sales. Mccalls, Simplicity and Butterick can be on sale for .99 and limit is five at Hancocks. I always wait for the sales which is quite a few times during the year. Keep an eye out for Hobby Lobby also they usually have patterns on sale for 1.99 each which is not a bad price also compared to 10.00- 15.00. for one pattern. Walmart is also a great place of course you can never go wrong there and find it's so easy patterns for stuff also.

I don't work with patterns much, but here's how to change your sleeve pattern to be puffy:
Increase the width of the sleeve at the top where it meets the shoulder by several inches. Also make the CAP of the sleeve a couple inches longer and CURVIER. If you notice how your sleeve cap curves slightly, change it so it curves A LOT! Then to make it keep it's shape I fold some fabric and cut it out in the shape of the sleeve cap and sew it in the same time as the sleeve. You can either gather your sleeve then, to make it puffy, or what's easier is to make little folds at the top of the sleeve cap going down each side until it fits. Good luck!

Good instructions Wyo Rose
My grandma taught me how to make my own patterns so I can do this, but for someone unfamiliar with how to make a "pattern" it is not a bad idea to pick up a pattern from a second hand store or one of the 99-cent specials as a starter.

OK, here's a pic of how someone changed their sleeve pattern to be really puffy. I think it's for a "leg-of-mutton" sleeve where the top is VERY puffy and the bottom is pretty tight around the arm.
It's pretty much what I'm talking about though.
