Question Jingles on Dresses

I've noticed there seem to be less jingles on dresses. The dresses are really beautiful but then there is only like 3 rows of jingles and not that many on there. Is this the contemporary style? I was just wondering. What do y'all think?

I would say, yes, it is contemporary style. I also noticed that the tobacco lids are not trimmed down to a distinctive size but instead they're rolled like a blunt.

do you think that the less jingles there are on a dress the more meaning of dancing jingle is lost?

I don't think so, b/c if you look at pictures of the very first jingle dresses there weren't that many jingles on them and they were very small, like they were rolled around a pencil or something.

I think that a dancer will choose how to make thier dress and dance the way they have been taught or whatever makes them feel good.

Ive seen old pictures of dresses that have minimal jingles on it as well..

I think that things like this go in "fads". Remember about 10-12 years ago when people were making dresses that had 100's of jingles. It was all about squeezing as many jingles on your dress as you could. I remember counting 11 rows on one dress. The big applique designs and colors of today will change and evolve, just like any fad.

walkinsoftly is an unknown quantity at this point
i remember hearing somewhere along the lines that the dresses with 365 cones on them were for specific purposes and that the whole one cone for every day of the year thing is not the standard for jingle dancing. I think that that may have come from some of the northern ontario jinglers but i can't be sure.

i think what was said is that those dresses were dreamed for a certain healing ceremony and that traditionally there was just one row of jingles around the bottom...come to think of it that part was on the pow wow trail, this documentary/show that was on aptn last year.

Anyone else hear of this?

thats right, originally some old man(i think)had a dream(or vision)of a woman in this dress that 365 cones on for every day of the year.she danced for this old sickly man/woman.and the next day that person was feelin better than he/she did the day before.

thats what my mom, and g*ma told me.

There was a thread about this a while back and if I'm correct the Ojibway say that this is not a valid reason for the amount of cones. But, I'd rather wait until a bonafide Ojibway jingler says it is so.
