beautiful dancers

I've gone to may powwows and have seen many great jingle dress dancers. Sometimes it seems wierd watching other dancers. There are times when i watch a jingle dress dancer dance and it will be just beautiful...sometimes i get all teary eyed when i watch it cause its so beautiful....but then there are some other times when i get disgusted as to how a certain dancer will dance w/ the jingle dress. is that wrong to think that?

Nope! I feel the same way. Alotta people say its just because I'm Ojibwe that I like to see it done a certain way but I also know alot of non-Ojibs who feel the same way. I hate seeing those crazy/wild jingle dressers out there...but its even worse when they're placing over the jingle dressers who are making it flow and look smooth. Dont get me wrong...I'm not saying it has to be old style...I dance contemporary myself I just dont like it when it looks carried away and wild. You can still be contemporary and be graceful and smooth

I prefer watching old style. As for contemporary style, I think some dancers get carried away. I noticed a couple of dancers out west dancing at breakneck speed across the arena, that's not graceful to me. They might as well fancy dance cause they've got the moves.

Sure have to agree with ya there. I think some of these dancers in the West need to go visit the land of where this dance originated from and learn it's origin and meaning, then maybe they will have more respect for it.

Oh yes I forgot to mention that I love old style, my sister friend from Wikky dances that style and she does it proudly and beautiful.

couldn't have said it better myslef mounaindew. thats exactly what i was trying to say. Some contemp dancers take jingle dress to a whole new level and it doesnt really look like jingling. Looks like fancy to me. i dance both jingle and fdancy but i keep my fancy steps to fancy shawl and do traditional steps for jingle

I saw the same thing at a powwow. The girl had fancy moves and she got 2nd place. I don't get the concept of competition I guess. What do they look for? The same people always win. Just my observation though.

on another note, it really bothers me when I am all ready to watch the jinglers get thier jam on...and the drummers push out a song that is wayyyyyy too fast. when i first started dancing jingle had it's own pace to allow the girls to glide a bit more and I think that the drummers were really concious of who they are drumming for....but when the song is too fast, it sucks...PLUS then you get a sidestep that is ridiculously fast and you can't even dance it.

maybe the drum group will push a good song, but it's reallllly inconsiderate don't you think?

Unhappy

I love fast songs! and I love contemporary jingle dress dancers. Old style is also cool to watch, like dorothy crowfeather, and bonnie rockthunder. My favorite contemp jinglers are willow, jennifer, and acosia. I think that everyone should just let it be, and kick back to enjoy all the different styles that there are to watch.
