all categories are exhibitions...and the jingle/grass dance together and the song is something between a chicken and double beat..? Ok, the AD says its a side step song? So, how are the men sposed to dance to a side step? The ad insisted that the jingle dancers go back and ask their grandmothers about that one particular song they claimed is a sidestep? I would like to have some feedback on this? Is this possible where ie: the jingle dancers dance sidestep while the grass dancers dance chicken? hmmm...anybody want to share their opinions?

well it was at a smaller pw..but I just thought it was odd that they thought they could really actually say that the singers knew their songs and the dancers didn't...hahaha

In today's powwows, new things that were unheard of by our ancestors, take place.

To the untrained ear, drum beats sound similar. To some, they can be used to accommodate more than one dance category at the same time.

A contemporary song, sung by contemporary singers, requested by a contemporary powwow committee - are able to make it happen.

However, each "tradititional dance category" such as the grass, jingle and chicken dance have tribally specific songs that accompany "their" tribal dances.

For instance,

You will not see a jingle dress song sung in Anishinabe country for both combined grass dance and jingle dress dancers to dance to. Anishinabe men will not dance to a women's sqauw dance song.

and

You will not see a chicken dance song sung in Blackfoot country for both combined chicken dancers and Jingle dress dancers to dance to. It is just unheard of.

Only at "contemporary powwows" where the committee does not have powwow teachings and history - will you see this done.

That's never happenned to me before. I think at the exihibitions I danced they just had grass and jingle seperate. Or maybe they had a straight song both of us could dance to. I can't remember, it's been a while. But combining two different songs like that just doesn't seem right.

well, lets just say the ad isn't that well known I mean afterwards he was asking what kinds of dances to do etc. Oh and we had a sidestep first and then a straight the next night..anybody that dances jingle knows that it is very difficult to do a sidestep first..so we asked nicely if we could have a straight first but he said he was the boss and he could just basically do what ever..so I guess that was the committee interpretation of what the pw was like. But I am not going there next yr. and no I didn't/wouldn't dance to the chicken dance either..I think it just got to their heads..y know..how that goes..power tripping..egos etc. Oh and the other guy who has helping the ad mentioned that he couldn't hear the jingles..? excuse me but what are u listening to? Through all of this had to remain calm and to really try hard not to tell them off..but like I said..and like who me said they aren't really around that much..but still..haha had to vent...

Well I dont know about the side step chicken dance idea, but I would be willing to try it as long as i got a hot jingle dancer as a snag lol.

*LOL*.........good luck and keep looking! I am sure there is some beautiful young jingler who'd be interested! :D Maybe you atta get a hand drum and sing some round dance songs! :D
