Turning A Full Circle
When I first started to jingle dance over 14 years ago...I was taught never to turn a full circle...and to this day I still don't...I see people doing it all the time now...what do you all feel about that or am I missing something completely please let me know...Thanks...I guess I am still ol fashioned jingle dancer.

life is crooked!
Yeah, I was taught the same thing, not to turn full circles while dancing. It was explained to me that the dance reflects our path in life, sometimes a straight line but mostly with zigzags here and there. Partial circles are OK but not full ones. Because Jinglers wear a medicine dress, the energy is to be used for moving "forward". That's also why Jinglers don't dance backwards either (at least in the way I was taught) and making full circles is seen the same as going backwards. I'm curious to know what other dancers were taught about this since other dance styles are allowed to do circles and dance backwards.....

Hey, Autumn I was wondering the same thing. I was taught the same thing. . . Probably cuz I learned alot from you. But anyway at the last powwow I attended there was a Jingle dress dancer that, while she danced she made complete circles, her foot steps also reminded me of a Grass dancer, it was different. . . not to mention while she was sitting behind the drum, she hiked up her skirt put her feet up on a chair, and un-zipped her top, she had her dress half on . . she still had a tank top on and shorts but still!?!?! she was in the middle where everyone could see. . :NoNo

hi..i was taught the same way..usually its contemporary jingle dancers who go into a complete circle...thats another thing too when its in reguards to going backwards...i was always taught that ya never do that ...that yar suppose to be going fwds. in life not going back....so yar not missing anything....but if ya see a tradish jingle dancer going in circles i think she really needs to evaluate why she came to be a jingle dancer...

Yeah I was taught the same thing about doing complete circles. I was taught that a circle meant perfection and no one is complete. Because a circle is perfect in shape and size, the circle is round not one side is longer than the other so it's perfect. And I was also taught not to dance backwards . If u think about it Mother Earth is a circle and the dance arena ia always a circle. So that's just my input.

What great input!!
Hey Ladies...awesome explanations...I always was wonderin what everyone else learned thanks again for the input...thanks for posting :) I think a lot of times some jingle dress dancers forget we are Traditional Dancers (thanks for bringing that up) and what is behind the steps and the dress itself.

What about those fancy, fancy moves..that still gets me..and those huge monstrous fans and like tons of plumes..maybe the circle is the in thing this year..actually saw this one jingle dress dancer do that like maybe 3-4 years ago and since then alot of them do the circle now..
