I was taught you are supposed to have a fan. I was told that the fan is meant to spread the healing powers of the dress when you wave it during the Honor Beats. But I guess it would depend on what tribe you are from.
I was also taught to always carry a pouch in your other hand. |

I agree; I've always seen jingle dancers carrying a fan, and about half the time they also carry a beaded bag. I would ask around more, in your particular area. Is jingle dancing traditional to your tribe; if not I would seek out alot more advise...

Traditionally (old style), no fan. However there are exceptions made by way of advice upon an Ojibway elder because of a specific reason to carry a fan, and that fan might not be an eagle feather fan either. There is always a reason Old Stylers do what they do, and it is not to be questioned. I am trying to be careful here because I cannot divulge too much.
The contemp dancers carry fans, and it looks beautiful. Seems like these topics about the jingle dress go around and around. Different women from different tribes say "I was told" or "I was taught". But when you hear the teachings from the mouths of our Ojibway Elder Jingle Dress Dancers, our Ogitchida Ikwes....only then will you have the true answers. Those women live in Northern Ontario Canada, Northern Minnesota and those surrounding areas. Say your prayers, go to those powwows and see how they dance, talk to them, ask them questions. Only then will you have true answers. Then you won't have to come here and repeat any hearsay. (In another thread, ndnmba advised to go to those northern powwows, pray and talk to Ojibway elders, so credit goes to her, I merely repeated what she said)

I carry an eagle fan as it was given to me by a holy/spiritual man. Still flabbergasted over such a gift. Anyway....I don't wave it during honour beats though. I tend to stick more to the traditional side of jingle dress dancing.
