We have never sang a crow hop for jinglers and probably never will. We might be tempted to cheat and occasionally use a "convertible" song that we've also used for double-beat, but I'm sure then we'd get "talked to" down the road for it. I try to err on the side of strictness when it comes to interpreting traditions unless an elder that I really know well and I know they've been doing powwows a LONG time (not simply "an old person") tells me it's OK and to have people go to THEM to complain.

The original crow hop is a double beat and i can tell how it came about it was through warfare, and crow men use 2 bustles one that has bunch of different kind of tail feathers added and another that uses eagle tailfeathers which is very beautiful. Before i start i would like to say that to have pride is a good thing but to much pride can also destroy us as individuals, life is a balance like a balance scale and to much of a good thing can upset our balance and make us ugly people. Here it goes.... Historians and Army agents have documented the history of the origin of the dances of the crow. The late Joe Flying bye, Lakota historian and the late Jim Black dog Dakota have the same version, which legitimizes the origin story of the dances known as Powwow as told by the late Allen Old Horn and told by his legally adopted father Old Tobacco who was one of three warriors in a particular battle between the crow and lakota know as the battle where only two crows were kiled. In this battle, three crow warriors Old Tobacco,Red Bear and Bell Rock took a bustle(the bustle with eagle feathers) carried by lakota warriors away from the sioux which was being carried against the advice of thier knowledgeable lakota,as told by Joe Flying Bye. This particular battle took place around 1873 near present day dunmore montana in the black lodge district when the main crow camp was the geographical location known as the curved rock wall, now a rest area east of big timber, MT on I-94. The crow learned these songs for the powwow(double beat) from the hidatsa in 1875 , after the sister tribe heard of the skirmish known as the origin of this particular recreational dance when they traveled from thier geographical location now in North Dakota. After the exposure to the songs that accompanied the particular powwow was introduced and taught the crow, many dances evolved and originated either by adopting from other tribes or originating a dance by emualting or imitating the animals of this region. The first crow agency was established in Livingston Montana known as fort parker around the late 1868-1873 when this historical event took place. Some crow people that originated the double beat lived to a old age and the following descendants of resource people that were singers and dancers themselves who would carrie on there legacy of dancing to the double beat, some who are Alphonso Child In The Mouth,Joe Horse Whip,William Little Owl, and Susie Old Horn. And almost all of these original songs are still known and sung to this day by crow people...... These crow people are Northern Traditional people who hold on to what is theres and do not copy anything from other tribes, some of if not the best beadwork crow style beadwork or flatstitch as we would say in english but that style of beading belongs to the crow people, thats another story , that is what pride is all about. I went into crow country once and found little children to my amazement still speaking there launge to each other like they know no english and what a beautiful launge it is.Poor people but rich in Tradition these people are and by every right a Northern Traditional people and the double beat dance a Northern Traditional dance and out of respect to them they are Northern Traditional competitors. |

The only places I've seen jinglers dance the Crow Hop is in Minnesota and Wisconsin- traditonal jingle country. There the jinglers danced it like the Traditional ladies do. And it was a while ago since I have seen this. I have not danced in that part of the country in 12 years. Everywhere else I have been, the Crow Hop is only done for Men's Trad or Fancy Shawl.
