well, this is a great issue, ...one time i was at a powwow and there were only three jingle dancers, and we were in crow country.....so we wanted a double beat crow hop... this was me, vestal and some older lady,,, i think...it doesnt matter...i wouldnt care if they gave us a crow hop..but only as long as its a double beat....i love dancin to crow hops...i think they should stick with giving the other single beat crow hop to fancy dancers...but they can give us a double beat and i think i can jam it...

but there is a reason for catogories. For example.... I used to show horses. I could only afford one horse, but he was very vesitale...barrels, western pleasure, rope, etc. But, I didn't run barrels during the western pleasure event. And, you wouldn't play basketball with a football....would you? Not to metion that the jingle is a prayer dress/dance. It has its own specfic steps for a reason. It is good to be a well rounded dancer and to know different styles of dancing.... but I don't think you should crow hop in your jingle dress.

crow hop
I have done it once wearing my jingle dress for an exhibition. I was asked by a crow friend of mine from the OldHorn family. This is the only time I have done crow hop with my jingle dress on.

CrowHoppin Jingles
i think that a crow hop looks best with Fancy's... I think that a jingler should know how, just in case... if you dont know what youre doing, it looks bad...
I have had to dance OUT of my catagory a few times... like ive had to do a round dance with my fancy on... things like that... i try to learn all the dances... even men's songs... never know when they'll have a switch dance !!! oh yeah... and i dont think if there is a CROWHOP that a jingler shouldnt do a dbl beat... there isnt the half beat in there... they look off, to me anyways... Tradish buckskin dancers look awesome doing a dbl beat !!! JUST AWESOME!!

ok please no one take this as like being a smart azz or anything but, i don't understand the meaning behind this question. Why WOULDN'T a jingle dress dancer be able to do the crow hop?
in personal opinion of how i'm viewing this question being asked, i think anyone should be able to dance the crow hop. but then again to some people that may be like telling a traditional dancer to do fancy shawl. like i said before i'm just not seeing why a jingle dress dancer WOULDN'T be able to dance a crow hop. can someone PLEASE explain this to me? |

ok...the bottom of my skirt is not designed to flair (like the fancy shawl skirts). Because it is designed this way, I have limited leg movement. It is another reason why you always see jingle dancers taking very small steps when they are "running" up to receive prize money...so we don't fall flat on our faces as our legs trips on our skirts. Now that you have that image..now you know the reason why jingle dancers does NOT dance double beat crow hops, too!

I agree, the crow hop is traditionally for fancy shawl not jingle. I personally wouldn't dance the crow hop in my jingle dress. I know elders who have spoken to young dancers for dancing the crow hop in their jingle dresses. So many young dancers change regalia at pow wow for max. dancing fun. Disrepecting isn't cool!
