help!to sit or not
what do u guys think?do you sit on your jingles w/a pillow underneath or do you pull up your skirt?i was taught that it is trashy to pull up your skirt & show a bunch of leg,but ive also been told not to sit on the cones even though they are cushioned.
i was taught the lakota way and i am also aware that the dress came from the ojibwe ppl and i need to respect the dress by thier standards b/c im wearing their dress.

It's not good practice to sit on your jingles. Nor to show what your mama gave you. I find it extremely disrespectful when a woman lets her legs hang out all over the dang place.
There are three options: a) Make a slip to wear under your dress for when you pull it up. It's also good to put a row or two of cones on the bottom to keep the slip weighed down. b) Simply place a blanket, shawl, snag's drum contest jacket over your exposed legs. c) Don't dance Jingle.

i pull up my dress too. sitting on the cones is not comfortable and if you are a certain weight, you can crush the cones. my dresses don't have an underskirt so I wear some capris or some stretch pants under my dress.

Mine have underskirts but even then I'll wear a pair of lycra/spandex leggings. It gets hella hot during the summer but I don't like watching dancer's dresses move up and seeing leg and thigh... that's just me I guess. I don't sit on my cones. The dress I'm working on now doesn't have an underskirt but i'm going to make a pair of coordinating loose pants (rubber in the waist) to wear underneath.

NEVER sit on your cones! Put a underskirt or make one to go under all your dresses. The way I pull my skirt up is to "pinch" the underskirt between my knees while pulling the overskirt up. That way it doesn't ride up while hiking the other one up.

I think underskirts look the best. Or you can always wear shorts. :) Once I had a full slip made and jingles added on at the very end of the slip it was made out of calico flower material that way durring breaks I could come out of my dress with out having to get fully undressed and be cool and comfortable. Actully it was like a tank sun dress. Very cute.

to sit or not....
I have been dancing jingle over 13+ years and I have tried all the suggestions recommended. I prefer 2 different ways, either a skirt sown under the dress (cotton) so it's not too thick or I either buy me some running pants which are very tight around the leg and it would be as comparible to a skirt sewn underneath as far as heat goes. I see some people with a pair of spandex shorts on and their leg showing and I don't really care to see that.

My girls were taught the Lakota way of some of the older folks, of not lifting the dress no matter what is underneath. It is not lady like.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that they are prudes or controlling or what ever you might think. They have the girls welfare and reputation in mind. Just want to protect them and to try to teach modesty. I for one find it refreshing since there is so much to the opposite out there. Seems the girls need some teaching. |

And even with an underskirt it is considered to be lacking in modesty to lift your dress up, and in public no less. :Blush |
